Internship - 6 month - Railway System Engineer - Alarm Modeling and Visualization F/M
Apply now »Date: 9 Oct 2026
Location: Saint-Ouen, FR
Company: Alstom
At Alstom, we build what millions of people rely on every day: railway transportation systems that cannot afford to fail. With more than 85,000 employees worldwide, we create the industry's most diverse portfolio, including high-speed trains, metros, trams, maintenance services, and integrated systems.
Internship Context
In a complex urban metro system, alarm management plays a critical role in ensuring the smooth operation of the line. Alarms enable operators to monitor the system and help maintain its availability and performance.
They are also an essential tool for identifying and managing degraded operating situations, allowing operators to respond effectively and minimize their impact on operations, a key factor in passenger satisfaction.
In this context, the internship aims to study the information made available to operators through Human-Machine Interfaces (HMIs), as well as the capabilities these interfaces provide, in order to design alarms that facilitate line operations. A key objective will be to establish the link between alarm definitions at the system level and how they are presented to operators.
The intern will also contribute to the design of a standard alarm list that can be displayed in a prototype HMI to illustrate different use cases. This prototype will need to be adaptable to Alstom's various urban products and solutions. The alarm list will serve as a basis for discussions and workshops with customers regarding the definition and use of operational alarms.
Main Responsibilities :
- The intern will be expected to:
- Analyze the structure and content of alarms defined in alarm specifications;
- Study the various mechanisms used to present alarms to operators, including:
- Alarm banners;
- The different views available within Alstom products depending on the urban solution;
- Any event-related views;
- Analyze the navigation capabilities available to operators within the HMI in order to identify and propose relevant features for operational alarms;
- Define a simple, structured, and easy-to-understand data model to represent alarm characteristics and lifecycle;
- Contribute to the interfacing of a prototype HMI allowing alarms, their characteristics, and their evolution to be visualized;
- Identify and propose improvements to make alarms more relevant and useful for operators, taking into account existing functionalities and potential future enhancements.
Your Profile
- You are currently pursuing an Engineering degree (Master's level, equivalent to Bachelor's +4/+5 years of higher education).
- You are curious and have an interest in systems engineering.
Environment and Interactions
This internship takes place within a cross-functional environment. The intern will work closely with both the Systems Engineering teams and the ATS (Automatic Train Supervision) teams. These interactions will provide opportunities to align system and customer needs with the capabilities offered by existing products and interfaces.
The successful candidate must therefore be fluent in both French and English (minimum B2 level).
You do not need to be a train enthusiast to thrive with us. However, there is no doubt that you will feel a great sense of pride when traveling on one of our trains with your family, friends, or loved ones. If you enjoy challenges, we would be delighted to hear from you !
