Characterization of fatigue properties in anodized and cold sealed anodized Al 5754H22

Alstom Västerås / RSC Traction Design -  20251126_TRACTION_XX

Background

Several enclosures and components support structures are manufactured from anodised and cold-sealed anodized aluminium. Anodization is applied during production to enhance wear and corrosion resistance. Unfortunately, It is well documented in the literature that anodization negatively affects the fatigue characteristics of aluminium. However, the restorative effect of the sealing process—particularly cold sealing—remains unclear or apparently negligible.

Problem description and goals

The aim of this Master Thesis is to conduct fatigue tests to evaluate the fatigue properties of Al 5754-H22 when anodised and anodized & cold sealed, in order to minimise a poor utilization of the full capacity of the alloy in our designs. The results allows the use of the material up its full capacity decreasing the amount of material by up to 30%.

.Compare the results of the detailed tests with the EUROCODE curve.

Activities

  1. Introduction to Eurocode 1999-1-3:2023.

  1. Understand how a fatigue curve is obtain from test data. Selecting a statistical method for the determination of the number of tests.

  1. Production of the test specimens.

  1. Experimental tests with S–N curve estimation: S–N curves will be derived from experimental data for three conditions of Al5754H22 (t=3mm): raw (non-anodised material), anodized material and anodised plus cold-sealed material.

  1. Conclusions and reporting.

Prerequisites: Background in Mechanical engineering, understanding of structural design, fatigue strength analysis, familiarity with test environment. Good analytical skills and systems thinking mindset.
