At Alstom, we understand transport networks and what moves people. From high-speed trains, metros, monorails, and trams, to turnkey systems, services, infrastructure, signalling and digital mobility, we offer our diverse customers the broadest portfolio in the industry. Every day, more than 80 000 colleagues lead the way to greener and smarter mobility worldwide, connecting cities as we reduce carbon and replace cars.

We are looking for a Master thesis student to join our team in Västerås!

Topic proposed: Viability assessment of Industry 4.0 within a low-volume high-mix industrialization process

Duration: 20 weeks, on-site

Background
The offices and production site based in Västerås, is a leading development site wherein electric propulsion systems for various railway transport solutions (i.e. trains, trams and locomotives) are designed and produced. A competitive priority for Alstom is the ability to quickly design and deliver a product to the customer in the shortest amount of time while ensuring a high standard of quality. The environment in which this process lies is dynamic and contains a multitude of complexities which lie in areas such as customer requirement management, process standardization as well as increasingly more modular product architecture. The increased application of advanced digital solutions such as virtual and augmented reality has become increasingly important to remain competitive, allowing for benefits such as decreased operational time, and production flexibility and reduction of operator workload.

Problem description and goals.

The primary objective with this thesis is to carry out a pilot implementation of a AR use case utilizing remote assistance, where the goal is to establish a better communication between operators and engineers. As well as to evaluate the feasibility of implementing AR within the organization

This project is in conjunction with a doctoral research project regarding digitalization which is currently ongoing within Alstom. As members of this project, you will contribute to operational improvements within the company, and can serve as a valuable resource for managers and relevant stakeholders who are interested in leveraging digitalization for low-volume manufacturing operations. To design a pilot study utilizing AI powered Smart Glasses within a real industrial setting and to evaluate stakeholder feedback regarding the implementation.

The following steps are envisioned for the project

  1. Introduction to the industrialization process at Alstom

  2. Introduction to the Smart Glasses software and setup procedures

  3. Design a pilot study regarding the implementation of said Smart Glasses.

  4. Carry out pilot study, with associated stakeholders and experiments if needed.

  5. Analyze stakeholder feedback regarding said AR glasses

  6. Analyze and evaluate the findings from pilot case.

  7. Conclusions, presentations and reporting of findings.

An additional contribution of this project is providing an overview of available digitalization opportunities which are applicable towards the various challenges of the industrialization process. Thus contributing towards scientific literature on the topic wherein the results from this thesis are subject for potential publications in international scientific conferences.
