Carbody Design Engineer

Objective

Managing Carbody Engineering activities and deliverables on a project in compliance with QCD commitments.

Mission

Responsibilities and Accountabilities

 

  • Design and integrate vehicle carbody, frame and sub-assembly components as part of the overhaul requirements from the customer and with respect to all interfaces;
  • Create detailed 3D models and 2D drawings in CATIA for vehicle carbody frame and sub-assembly components in compliance with QCD commitments, expertise rules and processes:
  • Experience in designing and approving designs of welded, cast and fabricated structural components and recommending modifications of components to ensure conformance with project requirements.
  • Inspection of rail cars involved in an accident to identify and report damage and the structural condition.
  • Provide corrective actions for carbody structural damages and defects;
  • Corrosion mitigation and repair procedures.
  • Perform weld inspections and repairs reports and recommendations to applicable AWS criteria and for paint repairs and paint work scope to restore the accident cars to OEM or customer specifications
  • Skills in metallic materials: Carbon Steel and Stainless Steel. Materials analysis, surface treatments, properties and selection.
  • Able to review and prepare structural calculation analysis and reports for static, fatigue, etc and give recommendations for structural design improvements.
  • Knowledge of general manufacturing processes including machining, welding, and sheet metal work.
  • Knowledge of rail vehicle mechanical engineering (Machine Design, Kinematics and Dynamics; Shock and Vibration, Stress Analysis)
  • Participate in formal design review meetings and technical working sessions; internal and external with customers.
  • Schedule  of  activities and deliverables assigned, in compliance with project master schedule;
  • Provide technical support to production teams and customers.

Candidate Requirements

Educational Requirements

BS Degree in Mechanical or Civil Engineering

Experience (Essential Functions)

  • 5+ years of experience in Mechanical Structural Design or 2 years in railway passenger car and truck structural design, failure analysis and welding processes.
  • Welding experience and knowledge of knowledge of AWS welding practices and procedures is required.
  • Required experience working with in Catia v5 (<5000 hours).
  • Certified Welding Engineer / Professional Engineer is desirable but not required.
  • Preferred experience on overhaul projects.
  • Good Communications and interpersonal skills including team work; Time management and reporting skill; Sense of urgency / priority.


 

Working Conditions (Industrial/Environmental)

Office work and eventually technical assistance to shop floor and industrial team.
