ALSTOM offers graduate engineers combined employment within the safety expert team at our Global R&D Center for electrical traction in Västerås, Sweden, and study within the IndTech research academy PhD program at Mälardalen University, focusing on functional safety.

 

PURPOSE OF YOUR ROLE

 

The transformation towards sustainable mobility drives demand for railway capacity, posing an increasing emphasis on safety. At the same time this demand for new railway vehicles makes shorter development and delivery lead times all the more necessary. Hence, it is vital to more efficiently ensure safety in the design and verification processes. A key element in these processes, is the identification and classification of functional safety hazards. Ensuring accurate and relevant classification can therefore contribute to improving actual safety and shortening lead times.

 

Your work will focus on the functional safety of electrical propulsion systems and their constituent components and products. Installed in trains all over the world, these systems face diverse operating conditions and a variety of safety related requirements. By synthesizing the most recent research findings on methods and techniques for hazard analysis and classification for the given domain your goal will be to provide a novel, more effective and efficient approach to classify or reclassify safety hazards (reclassification in cases where they have previously been inaccurately classified). The research will also assess the impact of classification and classification changes on the system design.

With the intention to shorten development and delivery lead times while improving the overall quality of the safety process, your work will help reduce the complexity of top-level hazard related safety requirements.

 

Working within the engineering expert team at ALSTOM, you will be a link to the forefront of safety research in the academic world. You will frequently be interacting with international researchers as well as peers in the global ALSTOM organization, potentially also external safety assessors and authorization bodies. In this role you will help us grow our capabilities in developing safe and reliable propulsion systems of the future.


YOUR ROLE

•    Conduct state of the art survey on existing hazard analysis and classification schemes
•    Acquire state of practice on safety certification approaches and relevant standards 
•    Develop a novel hazard classification approach and apply it within ALSTOM.
•    Evaluate the impact within ALSTOM of the novel classification approach.
•    Shorten time and improve efficiency for development in ALSTOM with novel classification approach.
•    Act as link between academia and industry, requires knowledge of ALSTOM products and ways of working.
•    Undergo a PhD program within IndTech research academy at Mälardalen University.
•    Set up and thoroughly follow a study plan with results beneficial to ALSTOM.
•    Publish findings in international workshops, conferences, and journals.
•    Participate in network activities.

 

YOUR EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

 

•  Education: Master’s degree in electrical engineering, computer science, software engineering or similar.

•  In this position you will need to develop both safety engineering competencies and a technical understanding of complex railway and railway propulsion systems.

•  An analytical and systematic frame of mind with the capacity to grasp the “big picture” as well as technical details.

•  A combination of curiosity, creativity and the ability to get things done. 

•  Proficiency in comprehending and formulating research articles and technical documentation.

•  You thrive in a team environment with a dedication to share what you know to help your team grow, all bolstered by excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

•  Fluent in English and preferably in Swedish.
