Alstom Transport BV is located in Utrecht and Ridderkerk. In Ridderkerk our service activities are concentrated on: maintenance, field service, renovation, modernization, integration of electrical installations, hybrid traction and the delivery of parts & repairs. The customer basis we service comprises the main Dutch operators like NS, RET, GVB, HTM as well as international customers.

The Alstom site in Utrecht specializes in the complete delivery and maintenance of signalling systems, aimed at safe and efficient transport of trains, metro’s and trams. Activities are conducted as engineering, testing and commissioning, maintenance and project management. Alstom has implemented main line signalling systems as ERTMS for the Betuwe route and urban systems as CBTC for the Amsterdam metro/North-South Line.


Overview :

This dynamic position within our organization has everything to do with the delivery of essential products for our projects in terms of reliability, availability, maintainability and system safety. You assist in planning and coordinating these activities from tender to the post-commissioning of Mainline and Mass Transit Railway projects. Your duties initially range from writing "safety validation" documents to advising projects on all aspects of safety design. In this role you will communicate with numerous internal and external parties at all levels in the organization, therefore you will need good communication skills.


Mission :

  • Implementing, managing and ensuring the "safety validation" for signaling projects and products, by carrying out reporting, assessments and analyses that lead to the delivery of a Safety Case as a product.


Responsibilities :

  • Organizing the "safety validation" activities in an offer or project according to established Quality / Cost / Delivery (QCD) agreements. A reliable OnTimeDelivery (OTD) is an important KPI for the safety validation activities that must be managed.
  • Ensuring the quality of the "safety validation" products to promote acceptance by the customer, independent assessors and safety authorities within the limits of the project's obligations.
  • Representing the "safety validation" methodology of the project to convince customers, national safety authorities, partners, consultants, and safety assessors that it has been applied correctly.
  • The monitoring and timely identification of the necessary safety requirements to get the relevant railway safety risks under control and to follow these until closure in the Hazard Management tool.
  • Writing “safety validation” project documents that are necessary for building (generic and / or specific) safety evidence file.
  • Performing assessments (Safety Case) of the designs, in support of the "safety validation" of existing and new contracts.
  • Providing System Safety Assurance strategies for quotations and project implementation.
  • Attending project meetings related to safety issues.
  • Advising projects on good practice when designing for RAMS.
  • Communicate with internal departments, subcontractors and customers about "safety validation" related to projects.


Tasks :

  • The production and assessment of safety validation plans for tenders and projects.
  • Making the customer's safety validation requirements demonstrable by drawing up modeling and analysis.
  • Preparing and producing Project Safety Reports.
  • Planning and conducting safety audits to support project release.
  • Reviewing all safety documentation prior to ISA reviews.
  • Monitoring project hazard analysis and advising on issues that may prevent the project from not meeting its safety requirements or acceptance of safety being achieved.


Desired Skills & Experience :


Education :

  • Bachelor Education (ing.) or Master degree (ir.) in technical related study (e.g. Electronics).


Work experience :

  • A good understanding of electrical and electromechanical engineering principles through preferably 1-3 years of relevant work experience within engineering a plus.  
  • Preferred previous experience in the rail industry.


Competencies :

  • Strong mathematical affinity.
  • Good team player but with the ability to work on your own initiative.
  • Ability to produce high-quality documents.
  • Ability to communicate at all levels.
  • Skilled in the use of MS Office applications (Word, Excel).
  • You preferably have insight into current rail or equivalent safety standards, such as EN50126, 50128 and 50129, as well as experience in producing or working with the export of some or all HAZOP, FTA and FME(C)A.


Language :

  • Fluent in Dutch and English (spoken and written), French desirable.

  • Pilot project of automatic train operation in the Netherlands on the Betuweroute.
  • Program Signalling Replacement, replacement project Electronic Interlocking ProRail.
  • Introduction of the CBTC signalling installation for the Amsterdam Metro, for the existing metro network and for the new North-South line.
  • ERTMS update projects on Betuweroute and Hanzelijn.
