Overview:

As a Project Verification and Validation Designer, you will be responsible for taking part to major developments by proving that the design is fit for its intended use, through implementation and execution of Verification, Integration and Test activities, fitting the targets in terms of Quality and Delivery. Detail and perform all the in-house activities related with Verification, Integration and Testing performed by the V&V team, and interface with experts delegated in other departments. Identify if activities need to be exported to site execution, and follow-up results. Interface with design teams to share and detail the results of V&V activities. Support the Verification & Validation Manager and Validation and Commissioning Manager on strategy, scheduling and budget, and share progress, results and issues during execution. 

The role of a Project Verification and Validation Designer is a safety critical position and vital to the validation of the signalling system and how it works in accordance with legal and AREMA standards. The Project Verification and Validation Designer will work directly with the Verification & Validation Manager and Validation and Commissioning Manager to define and allocate the testing scope of the various project stages. As part of the competency structure, the Project Verification and Validation Designer may be asked to mentor and validate the competency level of testers at all levels, this will be recorded on the tester’s mentorship plan and forms. The Verification and Validation Designer will liaise with internal project staff and the clients’ representatives at project meetings as required.

 

Key accountabilities:

  • Contribute to the definition of the Project Testing Strategy and the Project Verification and Validation Plan, and act proactively for its implementation.
  • Contribute to the Requirement Validation Table to define validation methodology for selected deliverables.
  • Contribute to the Requirements Verification Reports to define verification methodology for selected deliverables.
  • Develop test plans and test descriptions for in-house/site activities.
  • Perform and report allocated verification, integration and test activities.
  • Interface with experts in other department to align on selected V&V activity methodology.
  • Specify, setup and configure assets such as testbenches and instrumentation.
  • Provide data to maintain applicable KPIs.
  • Provide valuable feedback for REX sessions and continuous improvement.
  • Control configuration and change management cycle related with V&V activities (simulation configuration, anomaly tracking).
  • In Projects, follow-up with T&C for tests exported to site execution.
  • Develop allocated staff in accordance with Alstom competence processes and maintain any licences held.

 

Key Performance Indicators

  • Project delivery programme.
  • Timely completion of testing and actual timescales to tendered.
  • Actual costs to tendered costs, including achievement against forecast hours budgeted and actual.
  • Production of detailed progress records.
  • Production of detailed test reports.
  • Competency records and maintain licences held for Internal / external audits.
  • Number of suggestions for improvements and number implemented and lessons learnt.

 

Experience & Requirements:

  • Good analytical skill is required.
  • Experience in the railway industry with proven knowledge in Interlocking and Control Systems. 
  • Minimum 3 years experience in Verification and Validation in a Railway Environment.
  • Understanding of planning process, including knowledge of risk assessment process. 
  • Knowledge of Metrolinx & AREMA standards. 
  • Knowledge of Health, Safety, Environment requirements.
  • Occasional Shift / Night / Statutory Holidays / Weekend working required.

  • Punctual, reliable and responsible and eager to lead junior members.
  • Fully fluent in English with Excellent Communication Skills and Presentation Skills.

Other Desirable Experience & Technical Skills:

  • Master’s degree in engineering.
  • Knowledge of Alstom platforms and products.
  • Design and data preparation processes understanding.
  • Engineering and system background.
  • P. Eng or ability to obtain P. Eng in Ontario considered a strong asset
  • At least 2 years in relevant positions (systems / sub-systems integration, embedded equipment, in a highly complex and normative environment (railway signaling, aerospace, defense, nuclear) would be a major asset.

Travel Requirements:   

  • Ability to travel occasionally within Canada or abroad for training or site support.
