Objective
The Network Engineer will participate in Network and Telecom design team in designing, deploying and validating network and telecom solutions. In this role you will utilize your experience or expertise to solve problems, develop and execute objectives for self and others, and have the ability to effect short-term and some long-term business goals.
Essential Responsibilities
Multi-disciplinary environment working with the design, engineering, and the commissioning of integrated radio and TCP/IP networks. Solutions utilize licensed and unlicensed voice and data radios, LAN/WAN networks, and back office servers as well as other communication links between locomotives, between locomotives and wayside equipment, and/or between wayside and central office locations:
- Knowledge of network hardware including servers, routers, and other computer devices
- Use system requirements to design and deploy networks and virtual solutions
- Create and maintain documentation including System Functional Specifications, Architecture Design description and Interface Control Documents
- Trace system requirements to DOORS
- Work as part of the Backbone Communication Network team and assist Lead System Designer as needed
- Perform Communications Engineering tasks in support of program objectives
- Use traffic generator and network management tools to design a system that will meet network performance, management, and monitoring objectives
- Perform capacity analysis for a Communication Network
- Perform Communications Engineering tasks in support of program objectives
- Understanding of the system and subsystem-level requirements
- Document technical data generated by the assigned project consistent with engineering policies and procedures
- Network maintenance and troubleshooting
- Ensure documents be delivered as per project Documentation plan (Documentation Master List) in line with project Development For Quality Gate Reviews milestones
- Ensure Data Communication System project team members are aligned with V&V plan
- Participate in radio and network design and implementation activities
- Perform verification reports for requirements, design documents, test reports, etc.
- Participate to Installation and Test & Commissioning activities as well as network maintenance activities remote and in the field
- Perform other related duties as assigned
Qualifications/Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or equivalent work experience in networking or telecommunication
- 10+ years experience
- P. Eng certification or in progress
Desired Characteristics:
- CCNA/CCNP/CCDE/CCIE certifications desirable
- Knowledge to configure UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface)/ startup software of network hardware including servers, routers, and other computer devices
- Understanding of TCP/IP and LAN/WAN
- Knowledge of network security and policies
- Knowledge of routing protocols and IP or SR MPLS
- Writing and performing test cases on both network equipment and network
- Understanding of system and sub-system level requirements
