Industrial Relations Country

Alstom Americas is seeking an Industrial Relations Country Lead to manage labour and employee relations for its union-represented & non-represented employees in Canada. This position will report to the Director of Industrial Relations, Americas. The IR Country Lead position is responsible for developing and implementing labour and employee relations initiatives and strategies in Canada.

 

Job Responsibilities Include:

  • Establish labour relations strategies regarding Alstom Canada's unionized workforce and our employees’ bargaining representatives that align with and support Alstom Regional, Americas, and global priorities and goals
  • Provide advice and counsel to management on all matters involving labour and employment law and labour contract interpretation and administration.
  • Ensure workplace compliance with federal and provincial employment laws and regulations.
  • Provide counsel and direction regarding employment practices; ensure compliance with Company policy, procedures, and programs; interpret and provide guidance to employees and managers.
  • Act as a chief spokesperson for the Company in single and multi-employer negotiations with bargaining unit representatives
  • Prepare, coordinate and assist with Company pre-negotiations collective bargaining strategy and the internal economic approval request process.
  • Prepare and present the Company’s position in grievance meetings, arbitrations, and government agency proceedings.
  • Participate in and contribute to key decisions relating to labour and employee relations strategies for Alstom Americas.
  • Conduct internal investigations and present findings/recommendations to management.
  • Develop and conduct management training programs and campaigns in support of Alstom Americas' labour and employee relations strategies.
  • Frequent interaction with Union officials.

 

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • A law degree and/or Master's degree in Industrial Relations is strongly preferred. Will consider a Master's degree in a related field and/or substantive equivalent experience.

 

Experience /Qualifications

  • 10 years of progressively responsible experience in the Labor Relations field or practice.
  • Previous experience working with and providing guidance to senior leadership in labour and employee relations.
  • Significant experience with conducting complex investigations, labour contract analysis and interpretation, collective bargaining negotiations and representing management in the grievance, arbitration and agency proceedings with proven results.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of current federal, provincial and local labour and employment laws and regulations.
  • Strong analytical and persuasive written/oral communication skills are critical.
  • Well-organized, self-motivated, process-oriented, impeccable ethics and integrity, and a team player.
  • Excellent leadership, exceptionally strong customer focus and adherence to completed staff work are required to be successful in this position.
  • Ability to travel if needed. Business travel is estimated at about 25% of the IR Leaders' time annually.
