Purpose of the job:
Based in Toronto, Ontario, the primary purpose of the General Manager (GM) would be to be the single point of contact between GO Transit and Department Managers for Maintenance issues and support cooperative initiatives between Operations, Maintenance and GO Transit. The GM would also be responsible for driving continuous improvement and efficiencies into the maintenance operation, throughout all departments as we continue to make it as seamless and cost-effective as possible as we continue to move toward 15-minute service on all rail corridors.

Main Responsibilities:
- Directly manages the Maintenance team – for GO Transit and UP Express Fleet. Oversees a team of approximately 750 employees.
- Oversee all activities to ensure safe, prompt, and courteous service to GO’s clients in accordance with corporate policies, practices, government regulations, Canadian Rail Operating Rules and special instructions.
- Oversee all train maintenance performance reports and the interface with host railways rail traffic control centers as well as railway operating officers to ensure coordination and daily performance of train operations and to immediately respond and correct deviations to the operating plan relevant to train maintenance issues.
- Ensures that a training/refresher program is developed and inplace to upgrade andor maintain high level of competence maintenance teams.
- Ensures operational audits are conducted on the train service and the maintenance crews. Ensures that all train or workshop-related incidents are properly reported and investigated with appropriate action taken to prevent a recurrence with a full report to the Head of Ontario.
- Supervise, monitor, and coordinate the work activities of the management team.
- Maintain current knowledge of interpreting and applying pertinent rules, regulations, policies, and procedures set forth by ALSTOM Transport, the customer, or outside agencies.
- Maintains proper records of financial performance.
- Designs and implements new policies and procedures as required.
- Confirms the preparation of financial and administrative reports.
- Control expenditures in accordance with budgeted amounts.
- Proven leadership and successful communication skills.
- Participates in the performance evaluation and succession planning of personnel.
- Supervises personnel to obtain maximum efficiency while applying, within the facility the company’s policies and procedures.
- Act as liaison between site and corporation.
Education / Experience:
- C.R.O.R Qualified
- 10 or more years of management responsibility in a manufacturing or maintenance environment.
- Strong working knowledge of railroad operating rules and regulations
- Rules Qualification and Canadian Rail Operating Rules (CROR) certification will be considered as an asset.
- Locomotive Engineer qualification is considered an asset.
- Must possess excellent verbal and written skills.
- Must be able to communicate successfully with a variety of disciplines and levels, both internally and externally.
- Knowledge of budgetary requirements and long-range planning.
- Must be able to use sound business judgement and influence people of all levels.
- Strong interpersonal skills for training and coaching activities.
- Working knowledge of MS Office package.
