As part of the ONxpress consortium, Alstom is proudly working to transform the collective mobility of the Greater Toronto and Hamilton areas (GTHA) through the On-Corridor Works project, and we are hiring for hundreds of roles. The GO Expansion scope :  new electric locomotives, fleet upgrades, train control systems, network electrification, signalling, telecommunications and digital systems, maintenance, and much more.
The Communications Systems Engineer demonstrates leadership in communicating business goals, programs, and processes for an area or business segment. In this role you will utilize your experience or expertise to solve problems, develop and execute objectives for self and others, and have the ability to effect short-term and some long-term business goals.
Main Responsibilities 

Multi-disciplinary environment working with the design, engineering, and the commissioning of integrated radio networks. Solutions utilize licensed and unlicensed voice and data radios, LAN/WAN networks, and back office servers as well as other communication links between locomotives, between locomotives and wayside equipment, and/or between wayside and central office locations:

  • Perform Communications Engineering tasks in support of program objectives
  • Supporting project proposals
  • Interface with Customers, Vendors, and Subcontractors
  • Trace system requirements to DOORS
  • Definition of system and subsystem-level requirements and conceptual, preliminary, and detail design documentation including system level, functional, physical (incl. installation design), and interfaces.
  • Define Scopes-of-Work for Vendor, and Subcontractor quotes
  • Develop & peer review test procedures and documentation to validate system requirements
  • Document technical data generated by the assigned project consistent with engineering policies and procedures
  • Radio troubleshooting, propagation design, post processing, intermodulation studies, and radio dimensioning
  • Design of link budgets for various radio technologies
  • Coordinate with Regional and National authorities for frequency planning and license application
  • Ensure DCS project team members are aligned on a common planning understanding for the radio network. All actions need to be shared and anticipated through internal project N&T Design synchronization meetings
  • Follow up on any outstanding Design issues and take the lead when appropriate
  • Provide technical support to program managers and project engineers when communicating with customers
  • Provide technical support to Systems and Software Engineers to assist with development of new system architectures or technologies
  • Provide technical assistance to ensure all COMM products meet regulatory requirements for both domestic and international applications
  • Ensure Design documents be delivered as per project Documentation plan (Documentation Master List) in line with project DFQ Gate Reviews milestones
  • Adapt and apply Radio & Telecom Engineering rules to Project Design
  • Execute Preliminary Design studies in line with contractual requirements, with the support of N&T Design leader
  • Participate in radio architecture design activities.
  • Participate upon request to Installation & T&C activities
  • Perform other related duties as assigned



  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or college and at least 4 years of engineering or other technical work experience
  • At least 3 additional years of experience in a systems engineering role
  • Willingness and ability to travel <25% of the time


Desired Characteristics: 

  • Experience in project scheduling
  •  Radio propagation tools
  •  Radio coverage post processing software
  • Mapping software such as Google Earth or MapInfo
  • Analysis, system performance improvement, and troubleshooting of a radio network
  • Spectrum Analyzers, Vector Network Analyzers and drive test equipment.
  • Radio technologies such as P25, cellular , WiFi, and TETRA, etc.
  • Design and implementation of an 802.11 AP network
  • Radio System elements including filters, diplexers, mast head amplifiers, cavity combiners, phase harnesses, cables and antennas
  • Familiarity with GNSS and rangefinder equipment
  • Familiarity with multiple radio protocols
  • Familiarity with multiple network and communication protocols
  • Familiarity with calculations related to radio, such as noise floor, FSPL, power conversion and the like.
  • Familiarity with Radio Access Network KPIs
  • Traffic Engineering
  • Radio interference and intermodulation studies
  • Filing with regulatory agencies
  • Writing and performing test cases on both radio equipment and a radio network.
  • Project Management
  • Proficient with MS Office
