Track Construction & Method Expert

 

Purpose of the Job

 

Alstom is developing worldwide its railway systems and infrastructure activities. These cover conventional light rail, metro as well as monorail and Airport People Mover and also a host of innovative solutions.

 

The purpose of this job is to

  • Act as an expert for track construction and method within Alstom and outside Alstom
  • Promote in house solutions, products and associated construction methods
  • Lead the track competitiveness continuous improvement actions for construction
  • Contribute to R&D / Sustaining upon request
  • Provide strong support as Doer a/o sanity checker to Regions and Platforms on tenders & projects
  • Raise awareness of construction issues in the track platform and develop construction knowledge in the platform through training/coaching/mentoring

 

Construction covers mainly (but not limited to): construction know-how, methods (general to very specific), all types of planning (3weeks, Gantt, CdF…), workloads (team sizing…), plant&tools, process analysis, HSE, quality and logistics (storage area management, sizing…).

    • Such as hours/lmst, lmst/day, OEE, safety and CONQ.

Responsibilities

 

  • Work closely with the Track Solution team (TRS / Appitrack / Civils) as well as Track Engineering ans Track Technical entities
  • Manage track construction methods portfolio as per Ref Lib strategy
  • Support R&D Programs for construction/method
  • Lead R&D program for construction/method if necessary,
  • Innovation:
    • Propose/develop innovation for track construction
    • Propose/Review/revise proposal with a construction “eye”
      • TIF, Innovation board proposal, Innove you challenge…
  • Support competitiveness activities for construction/method:
    • Keep the Reference Library updated (new documents or update)
      • Standardize construction for example,
    • Identify and share best practises (in track platform and regions),
    • Propose, develop and support competiveness actions,
      • For example, collect REX from projects, implement it in the Reference Library as an update and communicate it to the track community
    • Promote and use reference solutions
  • Support tenders
    • Prepare/review construction method statement and planning if needed
      • And any other construction related topic (logistic, HSE…),
    • Challenge the tender team for construction/method/planning
  • Support projects
    • Review construction method statement and other construction related topic
    • Expertise to solve issue or to improve performance on site,
      • Such as to contribute to 8D if necessary for quality issue,
    • Construction audit on site,
    • Onsite training/coaching to boost performance/meet our targets
      • Temporary site supervision if necessary.
  • Construction community:
    • Animate track construction community:
      • Share best practise,
      • Develop benchmarking,
      • Standardize construction,
      • Foster exchanges Central/regions.
    • Standardize construction,
      • For example, one solution for one problem…

  • Support Appitrack product
    • Contribute to the construction part of the product/process
    • Support the Appitrack Manager for project launch

  • Promote track solutions, construction methods, & innovations within Alstom and support their deployment, in coordination with the Track Solution Director
  • Promote track solutions & innovations externally (design houses, customers, conferences…), in coordination with the Track Solution Director
  • Promote and develop any initiative to enhance our operational performance for construction,
  • Develop collaboration with external partners when suitable.                 
  • Ensure proper training for construction and other related topics,
    • Propose, prepare and execute trainings,
    • For track platform, Regions, onsite construction teams, Tender teams and any other relevant stakeholders
  • Build and develop construction awareness in the track platform and with other relevant stakeholder of track

 

 

Candidate Requirements

Educational Requirements

 

Qualified Engineer from any engineering discipline, preferably civils orientated

Professional qualifications an advantage

 

Desired Knowledge / Experience

 

  • Knowledge of all stages of Railway projects
  • 10 to 15 years of Permanent Way experience (mostly project execution)
  • Track record of structured approach to problem solving
  • Track design, construction and project management experience
  • Strong and extensive construction experience required in international environment
  • Experience covering concrete track mandatory
  • Experience covering tramway and metro tracks mandatory, monorail and APM most likely
  • Full understanding of track integration into railway system
  • Extensive track experience in international environment
  • Experience of team-building

Behavioural and Technical  Skills / Competencies

 

  • Ability to develop and implement plans from outline brief
  • Understanding of link between business development and objectives of future contracts
  • Facility to communicate with international clients, design houses and suppliers
  • Facility to communicate with construction teams on site
  • Facility to use construction network in Alstom to get onsite data and to implement new processes and products
  • Facility to use worldwide network within Alstom
  • Knowledge of other railway disciplines (signalling, rolling stock, civils)
