Alstom Services Engineering has an opening for a TC&IS Software Manager in its Saint Bruno, QC location. In Alstom Services, our focus is to provide excellence in customer support and develop innovative mobility solutions.

What are my responsibilities?

The Services TC&IS Software Manager is responsible for delivering high performance engineering solutions within agreed timelines and budget to support business and broad company objectives. Our TC&IS solutions primarily include systems such as Train Control and Monitoring Systems (TCMS), Public Adress & Customer Information System (PACIS), CCTV, and Wayside Applications.

In this role you directly manage domain leaders for system, software and test engineering, in addition to senior experts in software applications. You ensure the team covers requirements definition, design, coding, verification and validation of TC&IS solutions, including release of software packages. You implement the engineering vision and set clear objectives for the entire team. You are accountable for team performance and continuously motivate, encourage, evaluate, recognize, train, or develop resources while promoting Alstom values.

You review current and future workload projections to ensure adequate workforce scaling. You track team progress and compliance to budgeted hours. In case of schedule or financial gaps you provide a complete analysis, as well as a recovery plan.

You closely manage and measure team performance. You report progress and actions plans via clear and targeted Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).

You ensure the TC&IS team provides adequate support to project execution and tenders. As applicable, you directly involve yourself to complete the design deliverables on-time. You also verify compliance to engineering processes and regulatory standards to provide high quality solutions that meet customer requirements. You provide technical leadership and ensure the team follows optimal software design practices, with efficient and consistent solutions for all projects.

Alongside the domain leaders you identify design tools and processes to support the delivery of complex technical solutions, and work with the appropriate key users to optimize and adapt those to each project scope and requirements. You also determine training and support needs for the software development and test team.

You ensure the proper management and traceability of hardware and software configuration. You verify that each software package follows rigorous Configuration Management rules and is constantly released with comprehensive software documentation such as release notes, test report or software design description documents. You are familiar with typical industry software development standards such as EN50128, IEEE1558, and with software development V-models.

You understand the functional interactions between the various sub-systems as well as the related electrical and network interfaces. You are familiar with network communication protocols for railway vehicles such as Ethernet, MVB, CANOpen or serial networks.

Ultimately you are accountable for the global performance of TC&IS solutions. You develop and maintain test lab environments to verify and validate each software package prior to its installation on a train. You ensure each requirement is properly incorporated, verified and functional.

Your responsibilities include:

• Defining and implementing engineering vision (team profile and skills, design tools and evolution, …)
• Scaling the team workforce and skillsets in adequation with current and future workload, and ensuring rigorous compliance to budget
• Setting clear team goals and deadlines while continuously motivating and developing individual resources
• Providing technical leadership to team leads and senior experts, to ensure the TC&IS deliverables are completed on time, within budget and with high level of performance
• Deploying efficient design processes, methods & tools while contributing to their improvement
• Measuring and reporting team performance via clear and targeted KPIs
• Developing/maintaining solutions for the test labs environment, ensuring each software package is fully verified prior to its formal release
• Promoting Alstom values and continuous improvement initiatives

Travel of up to 10% may be required to support business meetings, or Validation and Test activities. 

What do I need to qualify for this job?

In this role, you are expected to build effective working relationships across a multi-disciplinary engineering team, with the ultimate goal of delivering complex and innovative software solutions that meet our customer needs.

The Services TC&IS Software Manager ensures comprehensive and effective solutions are defined and is accountable for domain performance in terms of technical, schedule and performance aspects.

You are versatile, proactive with hands-on experience and comfortable working in a fast-paced environment.

Minimum Qualifications  

• Bachelor’s degree in System/Software Engineering or equivalent combination of training
• At least ten years of experience in systems and/or software engineering
• At least five years of experience in engineering management/leadership including:
  • Team Performance, Scaling and Development
  • Sub-contractor management
  • Sub-system requirements identification and specification
  • Software Design and Testing
• Full Professional proficiency in both English and French

Preferred Qualifications

• Knowledge of Railway industry
• Experience with systems software design and associated processes or standards (ISO/IEC 15288)
• Knowledge of Alstom Solutions and Design processes
• Knowledge of Safety-Critical systems design
