The High Level Technician is a key integral role within Alstom reporting to the Service Delivery Manager. You will be required to assist the Fleet Operator to undertake supervised mechanical and electrical maintenance, detailed fault finding and repair on the Class 387 fleet of Electrostar.
What That Means Day To Day
The High Level Technician will be responsible for ensuring that any maintenance undertaken at the depot is completed in accordance with the company's process is procedures and comply with old safety regulations. This is a safety critical environment and all tasks undertaken will need to ensure that the operator can achieve and maintain the reliability and availability targets set for the trains. You will also assist the operator when failures occur during service and resolve any issues on the network. Other aspect of the role will involve:
- Reporting to the Service Delivery Manager, operating within a team of 8 high level technicians in a safety critical environment, ensuring any maintenance undertaken at the depot is completed in accordance with company’s processes.
- Providing technical support to the fleet operator to ensure contractual unit reliability and availability targets are met.
- Provide engineering advice, detailed fault finding and software loading for the vehicle as a whole and for key systems (such as TCMS - train control management system, Heating HVAC, propulsion, brakes, doors, on-train communications etc.)
- Assist the operator with maintenance, fault finding, software loading and certification of the European Train Control System (ETCS) and Heathrow Express (HEX) media systems, liaising with the product owners and system experts where necessary.
- Optimisation of the maintenance on trains as per defined balanced examination schedules
- Helping the customer with and diagnostics in all systems
- Produce solutions that provide short term mitigation and long-term resolution.
- Monitoring of warranty issues and liaising with supplier technical teams.
- Attending to faulty trains in service, component replacements and modification work
- Helping customer with root cause analysis using Alstom methodologies.
- Ensuring correct replacement parts are sourced.
- Assisting operator in updating of maintenance instructions, overhaul instruction, processes & procedures to optimize maintenance and liaise with Alstom Technical Publications and Central Engineering teams where required.
- Monitoring trains reliability & availability performance and issuing monthly performance reports.
- Monitor of trains in Service using remote monitoring system called Orbita.
- Download train data from onboard train data recorders and review to assist in incident investigation and classification.
- Run diagnostics software to identify faults with various train systems i.e. hydraulic systems, pneumatic systems, train management systems & on-board computers.
- Obsolescence avoidance and mitigation.
- Engineering support for all safety related incidents (NIRs), including representing the Customer with respect to access to Design Authority and equipment OEM’s and the production of affirmative closing actions
- Service Provider representation on the internal safety forum, feeding back decisions and outputs to the Customer
- Share experience gained of other fleets across the world which the Service Provider has supplied and/or supports, provision of recommendations and opportunities for design improvements, standardisation and/or modifications.
- Contribution to Health and Safety.
Additional information:
- Required to work a minimum of 42 hours per week, comprising of 4 x 12 hour shifts (7am-7pm, 7pm-7am) days and nights rotating.
- May be required to travel to outstations within working hours including West Ealing, Paddington & Heathrow Terminals.
- Parking available on-site and use of GWR rail passes for company travel if required.
Here at our Reading Train Care Depot, we provide a Technical Support & Spares Supply (TSSSA) agreement with Great Western Railway (GWR). Our team of 21, comprising of Technical, Engineering, Materials and Management staff are working on 45 Electrostar EMUs, 12 of which are retrofitted with the EBI Cab 2000 onboard signalling system used on the Heathrow Express.

Ability in being highly self-motivated, able to work under own initiative, has excellent communication & interpersonal skills and of course has extensive all-round knowledge of Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering.
Qualifications:
- Completion of a recognised apprenticeship
- Educated to high standard in an engineering discipline. (NVQ Level 3 minimum)
Experience required:
- Use of Laptop’s and diagnostic tools for troubleshooting and evidence gathering.
- Ability to work from maintenance manuals and schematics
- Experience of Mechanical and Electrical fault finding/repairs.
- Competent with Microsoft Office suite.
