About the Role:

This role is responsible for the effective implementation, maintenance and administration of the Alstom Environmental Health & Safety Management System for Melbourne LRV which includes but not limited to Southbank/Preston.


The EHS & Rail Safety Coordinator must support the Melbourne LRV project and ensure that all activities are planned and implemented in accordance with the Environmental Health and Safety Management System in line with Alstom EHS Policy, be compliant with Australian legislation and maintain certification to AS/NZS4801 and ISO14001


Your responsibilities will include:


Environmental, Health, Safety & Environmental Management

  • Implement the Australian integration strategy for Melbourne LRV sites
  • Effectively implement and administer the Alstom Safety System including policy and procedures.
  • Implement and monitor EHS Connect system on Melbourne LRV sites
  • Be conversant with the requirements of the State WHS Act and Regulations.
  • Liaise with depot maintenance personnel on matters relating to site safety and safe maintenance PM and CM activity.
  • Ensure that all personnel are aware of the EHS system requirements and provide training activities as required.
  • Lead the investigation of Incident Investigations with support from EHS Manager
  • Collate the first aid, accident and incident statistics and prepare monthly safety reports in EHS Connect for Events, Audits & Safety campaigns.
  • Table and graph EHS statistics for visualization and manage the EHS visual boards at all sites.
  • Undertake deep dive analysis for EHS trends Manage the incident/accident reports in EHS Connect.
  • Undertake internal audits and raise CPAs, NCR’s or Recommendations from EHS audits and incidents and implement improvement programs in EHS Connect.
  • Participate in site specific audits for Alstom certification requirements
  • Preparation of EHS Management Plans including emergency management
  • Coordinate onsite emergency activities such as drills and mock scenarios
  • Identify, record, and respond to EHS issues raised and initiate necessary action to prevent recurrence in EHS Connect.
  • Work with the Safety Committees and have regular recorded meetings.
  • Assist with the elections and training of EHS representatives.
  • Prepare and minute monthly toolbox discussion papers.
  • Manage the site safety inspections / walks.
  • Participate in subcontractor EHS onboarding assessment and reviews
  • Develop and lead reviews of Project Risk Register
  • Assist work teams with the development of JHAs and R/A’s.
  • Assist work teams with pre-start discussions
  • Develop and review site specific safety procedures.
  • Conduct regular reviews of the site hazard register for the sites.
  • Identify hazards and develop action plans to remove identified hazards.
  • Assist in the management of the key business systems and registers used for the management of EHS.
  • Attend monthly EHS Management Review meeting.
  • Interact with key clients and develop positive relationships with other key stakeholders
  • Support continuous improvement activities
  • Ensure that the Drug and Alcohol program, Fatigue Management program, Rail Safety Worker Competency management program, Health and Fitness Program is implemented and that effective record management supports these programs.
  • Develop a schedule of EHS activity for the site and champion the implementation of programs such as R U OK day, Rail Safety Week and WHS Month
  • Return to Work Coordination in conjunction with Alstom external RTW provider
  • Monitor environmental requirements, reporting and recording in line with Alstom and client requirements
  • Provision of support as required on other Alstom EHS projects with the EHS Manager


Key Requirements:

  • Formal training in EHS Management Systems.
  • ICAM or similar lead investigator
  • Certificate IV Workplace Health and Safety
  • Certificate IV Workplace Training and Assessment
  • Return to Work Coordinator
  • 5+ years’ experience in an Operational Environment
  • Intermediate to Advanced computer literacy and knowledge of Microsoft packages word and Excel.
  • Excellent customer service levels
  • Able to use IT systems i.e. Maximo for data recording and management.
  • Ability to implement change and lead safety initiatives.
  • Ability to undertake Quantitative and qualitative risk assessment and development and monitoring of risk controls and actions
  • Metro Trains Melbourne (MTM) Rail Industry Worker are desirable
  • Hands on and flexible to working arrangements
