Join us as Sr. Design Engineer, and you’ll be looking at a career-defining role based in Pittsburgh (PA), US.

 

Ensures the delivery of electrical and thermal designs for rotating electrical machines.

Converts customer requirements specifications into electrical equivalent circuit models and dimensions.

Supports and implements design tools for electrical design and performance.

Transforms electrical designs into technical requirements documents, design reviews, and production drawings, supervising the work supplied by drafting.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Performance Measurements:

  • Achieve Design for Quality Objectives
  • Coordinate with motor suppliers via written technical requirements documents
  • Deliver equivalent circuit models and dimensions to proposal team in time for bids
  • Deliver production drawing packages on time
  • Deliver design review documents and hold technical (Gate) reviews on time
  • Achieve costs targets and help proposal team develop cost targets

 

Requirements Documentation:

  • Review customer specifications for vehicle and translate these into specific traction motor requirements
  • Document these requirements into a Technical Requirements Document (TRD).

 

Electrical Design:

  • Run technical calculation tools for motor electro-mechanical and thermal design parameters
  • From standard list of parts, develop the equivalent circuit parameters to be passed to design performance team (part of proposal team)
  • Review results of performance simulations against motor electrical/thermal design, modify as required

 

Mechanical Design:

  • Provide technical instructions to drafting for 3D modeling of the motor
  • Review and approve the 3D models and 2D drawings from drafting against the requirements
  • Establish a test plan, procedures, and test report to verify design performance
  • Coordinate design with supplier’s facilities to ensure cost effective and accurate manufacturing

 

Transverse

  • Participate in product improvement workshops
  • Participate with other Alstom technical departments for problem solving and cost improvement efforts 

 

REQUIRED PROFILE:

 

  • BSEE in Electrical Engineering minimum
  • Minimum three (3) years experience with motor design or related fields or MSEE in electromagnetic design
  • Basic knowledge and experience using computer aided design tools
  • Working technical knowledge of one of the following;
    • Induction Motor Design
    • Permanent Magnet Machines
    • Linear Induction motors
  • Working knowledge of thermal heat transfer equations and phenomena (losses, conduction, convection)
  • Basic knowledge of electrical finite element programs (Maxwell or Flux2D)
  • Basic understanding of mechanical machines (statics and dynamics)
  • Understanding of principles of air flow, fans, fan laws
  • Understanding of sound generation and acoustic noise
  • Experience with computer aided 3D modeling would be beneficial
  • Knowledge of Office Automation tools, Word, Outlook, One Drive, Teams
  • Knowledge of numerical and quality tools: MathCadd, Matlab, Excel, Six Sigma, Ishikawa, Gant
  • Speaks and writes in English
