Overview

Nomad are on the lookout for a Operational Project Engineer to join our global Engineering EMEA West division. The Operational Project Engineer is 50% dedicated to the technical delivery of projects and 50% involved in various technical support and services of ongoing delivery projects.

 

The successful applicant will be working on exciting projects with clients in a fast-paced technology environment and will possess a deep understanding of Computing, IP network and Linux platforms, plus knowledge of some fundamentals of wireless technologies including WiFi and cellular networks (5G, LTE, HSPA+, WCDMA), even Satellite technology. The fundamental knowledge of Cloud architectures and IT infrastructures (VM or Container clusters, fundamentals of Servers products) are greatly appreciated.

 

The Operational Project Engineer coordinates all technical aspects of a project and works in close cooperation with the Project Manager. Communication, document writing and client-facing skills are essential. Supported by the ability of good planning and coordination of internal resources.

The Operational Project Engineer needs to define and test solutions, manage discussions with technical teams and coordinate troubleshooting in case of issues. Therefore, they need an understanding of IP networks, wireless technologies including Wi-Fi and cellular networks, and Linux platforms. At least 3 years of hands-on experience configuring and troubleshooting various network devices including switches, routers, and access points is required.

 

The Operational Project Engineer also manages and supports various transversal and technical actions like punctual migrations, optimization and consistencies of configurations on the interface between trains fleets and backends, but also web portal migration for passengers. Their role is also to remove and avoid technical project blockers on the embedded hardware on trains, or on the interfaces between trains and the central backends.

 

This role is a hybrid position with 2-3 days per week in the Paris office.

Duties and responsibilities include:

Technical delivery of projects:
• Work in a team with the project manager to coordinate the internal teams and ensure all deliverables are 
delivered within the specified timescales.
• Client interaction to determine requirements, agree on solutions, review documentation, agree on test plans and 
present results.
• Create project documents in line with requirements and planning:
o Documenting the design, including synoptics.
o BoM’s (Bills of Materials).
o Integration documents in case third-party solutions have to be integrated.
o Test specifications.
o Configuration, training and installation manuals.
o Documents for handover to operations.
• Responsible for defining and reviewing configuration to match the design objectives.
• Responsible for factory acceptance testing, on-site acceptance testing and ensuring the service is being delivered.
• Responsible for troubleshooting in case of issues, both by own investigation and by coordinating other teams or 
manufacturers. Can act as 3rd line support to internal teams.
• Managing the handover to clients or in-house support staff including training.

 

Technical support and services of ongoing projects:
• Technical Project Management and issue resolution lead.
• Autonomy and proactivity
• Be able to build the bigger picture and think out of the box.
• Federate internal and external stakeholders to progress on technical topics.
• Customer Service Oriented: Customer communication and advocacy

Qualifications & experience needed:

Essential
• Understanding of TCP/IP networking, LAN and VLAN IP planning.
• User knowledge of Linux.
• Fundamentals of Computer Science
Desirable
• CCNA certified.
• Knowledge of Mobile data networks.

• Knowledge of certification requirements for railway.
• Linux certified or Debian certified appreciated
• Degree level in Electrical / Electronic / IT / Computing Engineering or a related subject.
• Understanding of IT/Telecom Operations and Maintenance procedures.

 

Essential:
• At least 3 years of hands-on experience configuring and troubleshooting various network devices including
switches, routers, and access points.
• Remote management experience using SSH.
• Very good communication skills, both technical and user-facing in English and French.
• Autonomy, Technical Project management skills and mindset.
• Customer-facing and communication abilities,
• Good documentation skills
o Experience creating system schematics, Bills of materials, test documents and technical processes and
procedures.
o Good knowledge of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and preferably Visio.
• Thorough and logical approach to planning and implementation.

 

Desirable:
• Experience working in the rail/transportation sector, with an understanding of Operations and Maintenance
procedures.
• Wi-Fi and/or RF planning and implementation experience.
• Experience with hardware integration, interface definition and reviewing schematics.
• Experience working in a high-growth business requiring an adaptable and flexible stance.
• Experience working with Puppet, Zabbix and GIT.
• Experience with VM’s and Containerization.
• Experience with security and penetration testing.

 

Other Essential Requirements:

• The candidate must be fluent in French and English.
• Familiarity with industrial and maintenance processes in a railway environment is not an absolute requirement but 
strongly preferred.
• Ability to travel within Europe: Occasional 10% - 20% (depending on project phase).
• Able to work onsite, in train depots or shunting yards.
