Job Summary:

 

As a Field Service Engineer specializing in Mechanical for the Newark APM, your primary role involves maintaining, troubleshooting, and managing Train Mechanical systems and Guideway Mechanical Switches. Additionally, your expertise extends to providing technical support for other mechanical subsystems within the APM infrastructure. Your proficiency in preventive and corrective maintenance ensures the dependable and efficient performance of the APM, contributing to safe and uninterrupted transportation services for Newark residents.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Provide technical direction for engineering, maintenance, and repair activities as the technical expert for assigned system(s) (Mechanical Subystems). Participate in department budget development. 25%
  • Lead reliability improvement projects within a specified budget and timeline. Scope projects for system changes upgrades repairs. Select and manage vendors and suppliers. 25%
  • Analyze major service interruptions and create engineering incident/investigation reports (EIR) which include root cause analysis and corrective action (RCCA). 20%
  • Develop and maintain preventive maintenance and corrective maintenance programs for site systems assigned in accordance with contractual requirements, customer and company directives, and prescribed practices for specific equipment. 10%
  • Develop and deliver technical training, testing and certification documents. Teach classes in your area of expertise, when required, to managers, engineers, technicians and other personnel. 10%
  • Initiate, document and follow through with field requests, temporary change notices, field modification instructions and improvements to systems, components and procedures through proper Company channels using established methods for such requests. 10%

 

Other Responsibilities:

  • Cooperate and support internal and external audits. Assist in managing the Engineering budget as it relates to projects/tasks.

 

Educational Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or closely related field.
  • 3 years of relevant mechanical experience trains / rollingstock related.
  • 2 years of engineering or technical experience with a strong interest in the public transportation industry. Design, Project Management, Operations and Maintenance experience are a plus.
  • Relevant certifications (AutoCad) would be preferred.
  • Customer service skills are highly valuable in this role, as field service engineers often interact with clients, colleagues, and teams both on-site and remotely.

 

Local Specifications: 

  • Ability to pass local security screening and background requirements.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office with Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in written and spoken English.
  • Ability to support on shifts other than primary on short notice.

 

Leadership – Management or Technical:

  • Demonstrated prior success in leadership of people a plus. This relates to giving direction to blue collar union employees (at times).

 

Problem Solving:

  • Demonstrated ability to identify, address, and resolve problems, both technical and situational as they arise.

 

Area & Nature of Impact:

  • Local site and occasional division wide; technical, procedural, and safety impact.

 

Interpersonal & Communication Skills:

  • Demonstrated ability to understand and coordinate complex technical issues using various methods including data analysis. Ability to communicate effectively as it relates to conveying clear, concise engineering solutions.

 

Additional information:

  • Occasionally assigned technical tasks not directly related to system operations and maintenance. Will be responsible for the sourcing of new products and interacting with vendors on technical issues.
