Track Technician

Salary Rate:

$29.95/hour

 

Purpose of the job:


The Track Technician is responsible for the maintenance and repair of mainline track, special track work, switch machines, tunnels, structures, power rail, reaction rails, drainage, walkways, and fencing. Track Technicians must have the ability to work on call.

 

Responsibilities

 

  • Works independently or under the direction of the Supervisor and within approved procedures and technical methods in the preventive maintenance and repair of the yard and mainline track, switches and switch machines, power rails, reaction rails, structures, drainage, walkways, and fences, ballast, and ties.
  • Implements Work Permits and Occupancy Permits, undertakes maintenance and repair work on the track, and returns the track to the responsible authority upon completion.
  • Interprets maintenance manuals and drawings. Prepares charts and schematics and completes all necessary documentation, including Work Orders and logs.
  • Completes assigned tasks to Company and industry standards using approved work practices and procedures. Accounts for all time and materials used in completing each task, signing off the work as being completed to standard.
  • Makes recommendations for hardware and procedural changes that become evident during the performance of maintenance tasks.
  • Performs tests and prepares reports as required.
  • Operates trains, road and rail vehicles, and heavy equipment such as belt grinders, block grinders, speeders, etc., when required for maintenance.
  • Handles emergencies and failures following established procedures through immediate response and quick action.
  • Participates in regular training to maintain the required knowledge of maintenance techniques and procedures and trains subordinate personnel as required.
  • Adheres to all company policies, procedures, and safety rules.
  • Works variable hours and shifts. Performs other related duties as required.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 

Education:

  • High School diploma or equivalent required. Some college or a college degree is preferred.

 

Experience:

 

Required:

  • Experience with maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairing rails and switches.
  • Experience with heavy equipment.
  • A valid driver license in accordance with NY State DMV laws.

 

Preferred:

  • Four years of experience with maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairing rails and switches.
  • Experience in electrical, mechanical, or structural maintenance.
  • Experience with Maximo.

 

Competencies & Skills:

 

  • Knowledge of hand tools and power tools.
  • Ability to dig trenches.
  • Ability to work well on a teamwork.
  • Ability to take initiative and to be action-driven.
  • Communication skills: Ability to read, write, speak and comprehend the English language at a high level of proficiency while using the phone, a radio, in email communications and in-person.
  • Analytic thinking: Skilled at breaking down complex problems or situations into smaller, manageable parts to understand them, identify cause and effect relationships and the ability to arrive at solutions.
  • Rigorous mindset: Ability to ask critical questions about techniques and demonstrating a systematic way of making decisions.
  • Computer skills: Proficient in Windows, Outlook and Excel.

 

Physical Requirements:

 

  • Ability to lift between 50 – 75 lbs.: lifting tools, equipment, bags or boxes of material, coverboards, guideway slating, e-clips, plates, switch machine components, insulators, wood shorting devices, grinding jigs, tamping jacks, push carts, batteries, and rails.
  • Ability to walk up to 4 hours a day.
  • Ability to stand up to 4 hours a day.
  • Ability to bend, stoop and jump over 20 times a day.
  • Ability to climb up and down Maintenance Railway Vehicles.
