  • Receive the planning and reads the notice book to ensure the methods of working in a specific section where the shunt movement is requested in order to ensure that there are no changes
  • Attend to team tool box talk to obtain the information regarding safety and daily tasks
  • Inspects all the shunting machine prior shunting using each check list for machines (RRV, Easy-Mover, Master mover and PCS Crane)
  • Clearly ensure that u understand the requested shunt movements
  • Ensure that the risk assessment is done before any shunt movements according to EHS rules
  • Communicates verbally all shunting movements with Yard officials to ensure that all shunting movements are executed safely
  • Ensure to sound the hooter immediately before starting each movement.
  • Ensure to stop immediately the movement when the proximity of pedestrians or vehicles to the track is deemed unsafe.
  • Interacts with supervisor when there is a disruption in the train shunting movements
  • Observes visually and responds to all signals while shunting the train to avoid conflicting movements.
  • The Driver must always adhere to the applicable speed limit.
  • The driver must always run on sight during the manoeuvers, it is forbidden to run blind unless the movement is commanded by a shunter with a permanent view of the truck ahead of the movement.
  • Ensure when u stabling a train set or an individual car is within the clearance mark to avoid the train set colliding with another train that is being shunted
  • Respect EHS rules and any work related processes
  • Check shunt book to verify shunt movements to be made
  • Ensure that u clearly understand the shunt movement that is requested
  • Do the risk assessment before any train movement
  • Ensure scotch blocks, red flags are removed prior the shunt move and are applied after the shunt movement to avoid train run away
  • Attend the tool box talk to obtain the information regarding safety and daily tasks
  • Test the radios daily to ensure it is in working order before commencing duty
  • Uses hand signals, colour flags, colour lights and the radios for communication during the shunting and the train movement
  • Instructs the driver to perform the coupling and the uncoupling of the individual cars and train set Also in charge of installing the emergency coupler in the train to be shunted
  • Operates points (hand points) in the yard according to safety instructions
  • Ensure to always remain positioned in a way that both driver and the track in front of the way can be seen.
  • Report all the incidents and hazards to EHS/Supervisor
  • Ensure to report any faulty hand points and shunting delays to your Supervisor
  • Knowledge and understanding of air brakes.


        Educational Requirements:

  • Grade12: Certificate
  • Code 10 Drivers licence
  • RRV or Locomotive Diesel Drivers Certificate
  • English fluent
