Could you be the full-time Head of Fleet Engineering - NAM Services we’re looking for?


Services Engineering is a key function of Services NAM (Americas). The function provides engineering expertise and technical solutions to the various Business Units (BU) of Services. We support Operations and Maintenance (O&M) sites, as well as lead the design efforts for Asset Life Management (Modernizations, upgrades, overhauls of rail vehicles) and support the Parts Obsolescence business unit. We provide engineering support to all products maintained by Alstom that operate in the North American market (automated people movers, light rail vehicles, commuters, metros, locomotives…), as well as several of the infrastructure components (guideways, stations, depots, electrification and power distribution…).

 

Your future role
As the Head of Fleet support, O&M, Validation, Test, Obsolescence and Eng. Services Requests, you will lead engineers in delivering engineering solutions to agreed timescales, within budget & to an acceptable quality standard.

Your responsibilities include:

  • You are active in all aspects of the rolling stock operations & maintenance, fleet support & in-service technical troubleshooting, validation, obsolescence, and testing engineering, including defining strategy, tenders, project execution and product support for all Alstom O&M sites including APM and light rail vehicles.
  • Lead the in-service operations & maintenance, validation, test & obsolescence engineering groups. Manage the 24/7 troubleshooting support and engineering service requests. Maintain strong services and support alignment with the Maintenance Performance Centers in NAM.
  • Leads the services engineering team in charge of all aspects of the obsolescence management process & procedures, re-engineering and technical solutions
  • Support Engineering to local train operations teams for detection, definition and implementation of the modifications of the maintained products to improve the reliability and serviceability, to reduce costs and improve the performances of the systems.
  • Leads obsolescence engineering teams in providing engineering solutions to extend component life cycles.
  • Bridges partnership between procurement teams and obsolescence engineering teams to provide cost reduction solutions for obsolete or single source parts.
  • Develops the fleet support activities: at first line (OCC) and 2nd line levels (Centralized control room)
  • Owns and performs the Life Cycle Cost (LCC) modelling process
  • Monitors progress of engineering problem solving & troubleshooting work and Quality, Cost, Delivery achievements. Maintains and develops engineering skills and competencies 
  • Collaborate with Platforms to improve Services portfolio of products and services.
  • Owns the Configuration and Design Change Management and Engineering Management Processes.
  • Manages the technical performances of the systems and provides REX to relevant Services Platform.
  • Proposes innovative maintenance solutions and supports the Product Safety management system ensuring safety risks are mitigated in a timely manner.
  • Supports the NAM Bids (strategy, LCC, Spares, staffing…)
  • Interfaces with the stakeholders in the Certification processes.

 

Additional responsibility includes:

  • Manage departmental budget, priorities, resources, performance and reporting.
  • Multi-site team management.
  • Strategic planning.
  • Tenders and bids scope and Eng costing sign off.
  • Planning, cost control and quality of all Eng deliverables.
  • Workload planning and mobilization. Resource management, performance evaluation, career development and succession planning.

 

What you need to succeed:

  • Bachelors Degree in Engineering is mandatory, Masters Degree in Engineering is desirable, holds or qualifies as a PEng, ing.OIQ or equivalent US/Canada professional engineering certification
  • +20 years of experience in leading large technical/engineering multi-sites teams in high-paced technological environments with experience in the Train & railway industry.
  • Several years of hands on experience in the Trains O&M technical troubleshooting and in-service fleet support. Excellent Railroad technical knowledge (products, technologies, norms and standards).
  • Demonstrated leadership skills, excellent communication and people management skills.
  • Strong background in project management. Demonstrated experience in customer interaction and relationships.
  • Available to travel as required.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of rolling stock maintenance and operations with strong understanding of technical troubleshooting and the concepts of in-service reliability and availability
  • Proficient in problem solving methodology (8D) and lean engineering concepts
  • Knowledge of life cycle cost modelling (process and tools)
  • Working knowledge of safety management systems and safety risk assessment
  • Proficient in the use of MS Office, SAP, GSI, Maximo (other ERP tools)
  • Experience in managing local and remote engineering teams is desired
  • Knowledge of Alstom Design for Quality processes
  • Candidate must be available for regular travel and qualify for admittance to the various train maintenance depots across North America
  • Bilingual: French & English
