Services Engineering is a key function of Services NAM (Americas). The function provides engineering expertise and technical solutions to the various Business Units (BU) of Services. We will be mostly supporting our Aftermarket Customers with with engineering support to all products maintained and designed by Alstom that operate in the North American market (automated people movers, light rail vehicles, commuters, metros, locomotives), as well as several of the infrastructure components (guideways, stations, depots, electrification and power distribution). We are 230 professionals located in 17 different sites across the continent.

 

Could you be the full-time hybrid Parts and Components Mechanical Engineer in Naperville (US), Mississuaga (CA), or St-Bruno (CA) we’re looking for?


Your future role

As the Parts and Components Mechanical Engineer, you will apply your mechanical knowledge to design, verify and validate parts solutions when OEM parts have become obsolete. You will reverse engineer or develop obsolescence solutions, work on system overhaul proposals, and develop technical documentation for suppliers to meet FFF specifications and requirements. The design concentration will be mechanical train systems such as truck/bogie, doors, coupler, car body and/or train design .  You will provide assembly/repair instructions, and new design drawings, develop all the required documentation, create or update engineering change orders, and review vendor technical proposals to ensure compliance with specifications and product safety. 

We’ll look to you for:

  • Ensure all the parts proposal will meet the customer specifications in form, fit and function, railway safety, reliability, industrial norms, and standards. 
  • Be thoroughly familiar with the project specification and its requirements relating to the mechanical design tasks associated with the parts requested. 
  • Prepare drawings, and documentation of assigned systems and meet deliverable schedule. 
  • Coordinate and lead efforts with vendors to confirm compliance with customer requirements. You will interface with the end customer and vendors to ensure compliance and validity of the design. 
  • Maintain your knowledge of rail and mechanical norms and standards such as FRA, AAR, SAE, ASTM, ASME, IEEE, ANSI etc. 
  • Provide drawings, bills of material, detailed work scope, assembly and testing instructions for parts, equipment, as needed. 
  • Work on bids proposals to repair, redesign, and overhaul parts used in the rail industry. 
  • Provide instructions to drafters and designers for the development and preparation of schematics, layouts, assembly, and detail drawings. Provide engineering support during the production of the part, specify and select mechanical components to be applied in the parts. 
  • Provide customer technical support as needed. 
  • Operate in the ALSTOM CCB Change Control Board 
  • Lead Design Reviews and Gate Reviews for electrical parts. 
  • You will work in multi-disciplinary teams with Customers, Rolling Stock Engineering, Project Management, Supply Chain, Operations, Finance, Auditors, Platform (Tenders, Reference Library, REX), Quality, Validation and Testing.

  • Degree in Railway Engineering or Mechanical Engineering (required)

  • Extensive industry-related experience (required)

  • Experience in rail industry standards and design or with similar industry products such as transportation vehicles, train structural bogie , and/or train design (required)

  • Experience in preparing procurement specifications and technical requirements from customer specifications to drive the design of the parts requested. (required)

  • Understanding of engineering design change process, basic design for manufacturing, GD&T, etc (required)

  • Versatile, autonomous, with hands-on experience, comfortable working in a fast-paced environment in unclear and ill-defined environments, and resourceful in finding information through multiple forms of communication. 

  • Knowledge of rolling stock systems and components. 

  • Knowledge of safety management systems and safety risk assessment. 
  • Proficient in the use of design tools, MS Office, PDM, SAP, GSI, and Maximo (other ERP tools). 
  • Knowledge of Alstom Design for Quality processes. 
  • The design concentration will be mechanical systems and train design .
