Employing 6,000 people across the UK and Ireland, we design, build and test trains at the UK’s largest end-to-end train manufacturing factory in Derby and operate major sites at Widnes, Crewe, Ilford and Plymouth, as well as 30 train services depots across the UK&I
Your future role
Higher Technicians are to ensure Alstom meet our contractual requirements for the maintenance and operational running of the new Aventra Class 730 Fleet.
Working to VMI/VMP and test procedures ensuring that all train systems work to specifications. Investigating problems and diagnosing potential train faults. Provide on train technical support and in-depth fault analysis and rectification, perform static functional testing and provide train test reports.
We’ll look to you for:
- Communicate with customer and colleagues
- Fault finding and fault rectification
- Undertake in-depth fault analysis and system preventative interventions
- Liaise with and provide support to Outstation and ISST roles
- Provide scope of work instructions
- Provide technical support to the depot teams in the provision of fault finding expertise and assistance with train repair activities.
- Undertake campaigns for fleet software updates
- Proficient in fault analysis tools (Fleet Monitor, OTDR, System fault log analysis)
- Follow and implement tasks in accordance with Vehicle Maintenance Instructions (VMI’s) and Vehicle Maintenance Procedures (VMP’s)
- Facilitate off site working, working around the network covered by the customer.
- Provide on train technical support
- Support customer operational requirements
- Detailed fault reporting and recording on web based and App based systems
- Detects, defines and implements the modifications of the maintained products to improve the reliability and serviceability, in order to reduce project costs and improve the performances of the systems.
- Proposes innovative solutions and develops and implements
- Assist with skills development within depots and train care points.
- Arrange and undertake test runs to assist in fault finding and resolution of faults, in particular the closeout of repeat failures.
- Functionally test train borne systems with minimal supervision using a variety of techniques and methods, including the use of computer based diagnostics systems.
- Review and rectify test specifications and documentation for functional tests.
- Assist with the validation of documentation issued in support of maintenance and repair activities, special checks, modifications and experiments.
- Assist in the validation of Maintenance Schedule amendments and other technical instructions.
- Assists with the validation of locally produced technical instructions.
- Provide technical support in connection with special checks and experiments.

- HNC/HND in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering preferable
- GNVQ Level 3 in Electrical based industry (Rail, Aerospace, Military) required
- Previous Experience in rolling stock
- Proven experience in health and safety
- Good IT skills in Microsoft Offices.
