Master Thesis: Evaluation of Drone-Based Inspection Solutions for TRAXX Service Process Optimization

The objective of this master thesis is to analyze the current preparation and servicing process of TRAXX locomotives and identify opportunities to improve efficiency, quality, and safety through the application of innovative technologies.

The thesis shall begin with a detailed assessment of the existing preparation workflow, including the identification of time-consuming activities, operational constraints, and potential improvement areas. Based on this analysis, concepts shall be developed for the integration of drone-based inspection and supervision solutions. Potential use cases may include the inspection of coupling points, pantographs, roof-mounted equipment, underframe components, and other areas that are difficult to access during routine preparation activities.

Depending on the candidate's interests and competencies, the work can focus on one of two directions:

  1. Concept Development and Feasibility Assessment

    • Analysis of current service and preparation processes
    • Identification and evaluation of suitable drone applications
    • Development of operational concepts and business cases
    • Assessment of expected benefits regarding preparation time, safety, quality, and cost
  2. Technical Implementation and Safety Concept

    • Development and programming of drone-supported inspection functions
    • Evaluation of suitable sensors, navigation, and image-processing technologies
    • Definition of safety concepts and risk mitigation measures
    • Investigation of collision avoidance strategies for operation in railway environments, including risks related to catenary systems, infrastructure, vehicles, and other obstacles

The thesis shall conclude with recommendations for the practical implementation of drone-supported solutions within the TRAXX service environment and an assessment of their technical and economic feasibility.

Expected Outcome: A well-founded concept and/or prototype demonstrating how drone technology can contribute to reducing locomotive preparation and service times while maintaining or improving safety and quality standards.
