The Mechanical Technical Trainer role plans, designs, executes, and administers the mechanical training content in accordance with the site maintenance plan for Locomotive and Coach/Cab Car equipment.  Content shall be developed and delivered to ensure employees perform their jobs according to federal, state, local, company and customer requirements.


The trainer ideally would have a mechanical technical background in locomotives. The trainer must be able to develop targeted content for the audience, to ensure optimum understanding. This may include technical theory, practical demonstrations (hands-on training), visual presentations, etc. 


This candidate will also work alongside the fleet specialists to support in failure mode identification, as well as root cause analysis. This support will be used to develop new content, as well as gauge any learning or understanding gaps that the employee base is currently facing.




  • The technical trainer delivers content via in-person training, virtual modules, videos, and other written communication (such as technical bulletins.) The focus of this content will be for the improved understanding, maintenance, and corrective actions necessary for Locomotive and Coach/Cab Car mechanical systems.
  • The technical trainer develops content needed due to emerging regulatory, compliance, performance, and maintenance needs. gaps.
  • In support of this activity, the mechanical technical trainer may assist in failure mode and root cause analysis for issues identified through service interruptions/delays, preventive maintenance quality issues, and inspection/audit
  • The mechanical technical trainer is responsible for planning for training delivery. The trainer will work with the training coordinator to setup the schedules and identify the correct audience for the training courses being delivered.
  • As part of the administration portion, the mechanical technical trainer must also maintain and organize manuals, reference documents, training materials, etc.




  • Candidate ideally holds a Mechanical Engineering degree, or a technical degree with strong industry experience.
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience as a trainer/instructor.-        
  • An ideal candidate will have a strong locomotive and railroad background. Must know how a diesel engine works, components, maintenance, etc. .
  • Written & Oral English
  • Familiarity with FRA, NTSB, OSHA, CALOSHA, CCR, APTA, and CFR regulations.
  • Experience developing training content (PowerPoint presentations, technical writing, creating demonstration videos, etc.)
