Could you be the full-time Designated Supervisor for Locomotive Engineers (DSLE) in California we’re looking for?
This role is to support Metrolink service at an assigned crew but will require flexibility covering other crew bases within the territory. As such, the successful candidate will be in the greater Los Angeles area. Relocation may be offered.
Your future role

You'll play a vital role in ensuring the safe and efficient operation of locomotives and trains, while mentoring and guiding engineers and conductors to achieve compliance with all rules and regulations. Day-to-day, you’ll work closely with teams across the business (Safety, Training, and Compliance Managers), oversee operations, and respond to service disruptions, among other responsibilities.
You’ll specifically take care of overseeing locomotive engineer and conductor certification requirements, but also ensure adherence to all FRA regulations and SCRRA guidelines.
We’ll look to you for:
- Monitoring employees for compliance with regulations and operating practices.
- Taking consistent and fair action for non-compliance.
- Managing employees and train operations to optimize on-time performance (OTP) and recommending improvements.
- Responding to service disruptions within your area of responsibility.
- Enforcing safety plans and providing written and oral reports.
- Interviewing, selecting, and managing new-hire locomotive engineers and conductors.
- Administering engineer and conductor recertification courses and operating rules classes in coordination with the Training Manager.
- Conducting efficiency tests and ensuring compliance in collaboration with Compliance Managers.
- Maintaining understanding of operating rules, PTC systems, safety rules, and equipment operations.
- Participating in safety briefings and observing employee qualifications and compliance.
- Complying with all SCRRA rules, instructions, guidelines, and policies.

- Bachelor’s degree in Transportation, Business, or a related field, or equivalent work experience.
- Certified Locomotive Engineer with a Locomotive Engineer Certification.
- Completion of an approved GCOR Training Program within the last three years.
- At least two years of experience as a supervisor for an FRA-regulated railroad.
- Seven years of experience as a railroad engineer for an FRA-regulated railroad.
- Knowledge of FRA regulations, GCOR, timetables, and special instructions.
- Understanding of CPUC and ADA requirements.
- Strong leadership potential, interpersonal skills, and the ability to manage under time pressures and emergency situations.
- Proficiency in English oral and written communication and record-keeping.
- Valid California Driver’s License and a clean driving record.

Pay Range
$120,000.00 to $140,000.00 depending on experience/qualifications.
This position is eligible for Railroad Retirement.
