As a Wayside Mechanical Engeeer, you will need to design and develop complex transit related mechanical subsystems for revenue and Research and Development Projects. Work closely with civil and electrical engineering teams to develop specifications including detailed drawings and assemblies. Lead and execute the integration process where initial requirements for Transit System Electrical /Mechanical (E&M) equipment (power rail, monorail switchbeams, trackwork, station platform screen door, operations) are provided to a Civil Partner, followed by review of the Civil Partner design (trackwork alignment, stations, guideway) to ensure these  E&M requirements have been met.  Supports E&M installations activities and provides engineering support for on-site troubleshooting of mechanical/civil interfaces during installation, testing, and commissioning periods.


Your responsibilities will include:


  • Integral Part of the Design Team:  provided mechanical, or civil recommendations based on experience or analysis.  Determines the form, fit & function of the design & incorporates cost-effective & manufacturing concepts into the design. Interprets customer specifications to ensure that the design is compliant.  Responsible to make sure that designs are completed per the project schedule.
  • Mechanical Interface Design Management: Develop, specify and manage the technical interfaces for implementation within railway or monorail transit systems. Ability for gaining knowledge of Mechanical /Electrical equipment that are to be incorporated within the civil design of the guideway and stations (by others) by preparing Design Construction Interface Manuals (D/CIM). Review of Civil design for compliance with D/CIM requirements.
  • Interface with customer, partners and Alstom’s subsystems to implement transit projects.  Interfaces with engineering, purchasing, manufacturing and outside suppliers as needed.
  • Good communicator and ability for managing interfaces.
  • Coordinates, tracks, and manages external design and drafting efforts.  Mentors less experienced engineers, designers, and drafters.
  • Support Alstom Quality Assurance and testing groups through preparation of Mechanical Works Hand-Over requirements, review as-built data for tolerances /running surfaces/clearances, and preparation of test procedures and reports.
  • Desirable: Trackwork Design:  Prepare Technical Requirements Documents for suppliers to quote design, supply and installation scope for trackwork.  Review of supplier bids, review of supplier technical designs for interfaces and support Site team inquires during the trackwork design and construction process.


Key requirements:


  • Mechanical or Civil Engineering Degree or equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Ten (10) years of relevant experience.
  • Experience with electro/mechanical designs.
  • Demonstrated skills in product development with hands-on understanding of manufacturability.
  • Experience with Autocad and solid works drawing/modelling packages (Solidworks and Catia). 
  • Strong understanding of Engineering Process.
  • Understanding of the Railway/Transit industry.
  • Knowledge of Trackwork design and subsystem applications (desirable).
  • Strong understanding of objectives, capabilities and processes of  Project Management, Subsystem Engineering.
