Services Engineering is a key function of Services NAM (Americas). The function provides engineering expertise and technical solutions to the various Business Units (BU) of Services. We support Operations and Maintenance (O&M) sites, as well as lead the design efforts for Asset Life Management (Modernizations, upgrades, overhauls of rail vehicles) and support the Parts Obsolescence BU. We provide engineering support to all products maintained by Alstom that operate in the North American market (automated people movers, light rail vehicles, commuters, metros, locomotives…), as well as several of the infrastructure components (guideways, stations, depots, electrification and power distribution…). We are 180 professionals, located in 17 different sites across the continent.

Alstom has an opening for a Bogie Fleet Support Engineer. The position is posted for our Kanona site, however, the selected candidate could be based out of other NAM Services sites. In Alstom Services, our focus is to provide excellence in customer support and develop innovative mobility solutions.

 

Objective

The candidate will work within Alstom NAM Services part of the Train Design Engineering team. The department  support internal customers execute modernization, upgrades, overhauls contract and wreck repair ,based on customer technical specification, while respecting Quality Cost Delivery commitments.

 

Responsibilities and Accountabilities

  • You will be responsible to lead and manage bogie activities within NAM Services Engineering group. Support all projects in Canada and US (overhaul, wreck repair, form, fit and function assessment…)
  • Being responsible for wrecked bogie technical assessments, structural design for repairs or overhaul and structural welding.
  • Review the technical input for overhaul project, covering areas such as the definition of requirements compliance, functional fit, technological capability, cost, and delivery capability.
  • Assess the feasibility of the proposed solution (performance, delivery model and organizational fit), and propose mitigation plans.
  • Engages with projects/programs to ensure technical risks are being identified and managed
  • Contribute to Design Reviews for subject matter in his/her field of critical developments and projects.
  • To assist tenders to ensure adherence to the customer requirements in compliance with Quality, Cost and Delivery commitments.
  • Grow bogie expertise within NAM Services Engineering group.

 

Educational Requirements

BS Degree in Mechanical or Structural Engineering. MSc preferred but not mandatory.

 

Experience (Essential Functions)

  • 5+ years of design/service engineering
  • Proven experience in bogie design area
  • Required knowledge of rail car vehicles (Light rail vehicles, commuters, locomotives)
  • Welding experience and knowledge of AWS welding practices and procedures is required.
  • Significant experience in the subject matter in his field
  • Structural mechanics and fatigue assessments
  • Required experience working with in Catia V5.
  • Working experience with required codes and standards (APTA, FRA, AAR)
  • Good knowledge of train architecture, bogie interface
  • Knowledge of mechanical transmission area (architecture, pre-sizing)
  • Knowledge of mechanical brake area (architecture, pre-sizing)
  • Knowledge and experience working with Carbon Steel and Stainless Steel. Materials analysis, surface treatments, properties and selection.
  • Knowledge of general manufacturing processes including machining, welding, and sheet metal work.
  • Professional Engineer is desirable but not mandatory.
  • Preferred experience on overhaul or repair projects.

Work Environment:

  • The employee will normally work in an office environment, with frequent exposure to electronic office equipment.
  • The employee will be required to work alongside personnel in a manufacturing environment while wearing required personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • The employee will be required to travel to Alstom sites (National and international) or customer sites for “Boots on the ground” activities.
