Within Maintenance Project, the System Engineers (SE) are in charge to conserve and optimize the global performances of the train: mainly Safety, Reliability and Serviceability. They are the technical reference for all the maintenance sites for the subsystem they have in charge, and the link with the Design Authority.

Their job during warranty period is largely dedicated to support the reliability growth, eradicating the technical anomalies.

They also provide from day 1 all necessary technical inputs for Maintenance execution.

The Train System Engineer (TSE)  or ‘System Engineer – Lead’ is the leader and direct manager of SE team, to whom the Project Engineering Manager (PrEM) largely delegates the technical decisions for daily operations and also the coordination of longer term action plans (resolution of technical issues, optimization of performances especially via LCC/maintenance plan).

The TSE is also regularly in interface with the end customer and design authorities.


Responsibilities and Accountabilities

In the context of Next Generation High Speed Trains project, ALSTOM is offering high level of Maintenance Service to AMTRAK operator, under the form of TSSSA contract (Technical Support and Spares Supply Agreement).

The Train System Engineer (TSE) has the global responsibility of all subsystems of the Rolling Stock, that is:

1. Managing technical subjects related to Train design, in particular :

  • Design anomalies from detection to fix, leading necessary analysis, investigations, meetings…
  • Design changes from request to validation, including analysis of impact & business case if necessary
  1. Managing all technical subjects related to Maintenance, in particular:
  • Implementation and optimization of Maintenance Plan in operations, including related validations
  • Technical inputs to build maintenance procedures (e.g. define wear limit criteria, test procedure…)
  1.  Monitoring system performance, in particular: Safety, Reliability, Serviceability.

Driving the related analysis and keeping traceability of reports, decisions, etc.

Overall maintenance of fleet and sub-system health , maintaining current status and improvement projects

  1. Making decisions related to Railways Safety referring to Design Authority when necessary.  

Addressing the technical actions for closing Safety issue.

  1. Providing technical inputs to all Maintenance Site organization :
    • Industrial team
    • On-Site Engineers supporting Amtrak production team
    • Alstom Troubleshooters
    • Training Manager.
  2. Monitoring obsolescence and develop resolution plan for subsystems in charge
  3. Optimizing testability on-train (as a team with Troubleshooters) and off-train (in collaboration with external vendors and Alstom repair centers)
  4. Provide formal periodical reporting about progress of the activities above, making sure they are addressed according to the priorities defined at project level.
  5. Manages supporting and inclusive functions:  Cyber – security elements of the train and maintenance, MMIS, Technical Library, technical documentation and process audits


Position in Alstom organization:

 - 5 functional reports;

 - Reporting functionally and hierarchically to the TSSSA Project Engineering Manager ;


Educational Requirements

Bachelors Degree in Engineering

Must be fluent in English


Experience (Essential Functions)

Minimum 3 years in Railways operations environment, preferably for Main Lines Passenger Rail in Warranty/Maintenance environment.

Good overall knowledge of all subsystems of the rolling stock. Minimum 3 years in SE position / 1 year in TSE position.


Working Conditions (Industrial/Environmental)

Position based in Washington,DC with Average travel 10% time, especially on the other train maintenance facilities.   (stabilized)

During the months of validation and early commissioning of the fleet, a higher level of travel is expected for inductions, contribution to validation, test, project launch functions
