Employing 6,000 people across the UK and Ireland, we design, build and test trains at the UK’s largest end-to-end train manufacturing factory in Derby and operate major sites at Widnes, Crewe, Ilford and Plymouth, as well as 30 train services depots across the UK&I
Your future role
Working under the guidance of the Methods Manager this role will provide the business with optimum solutions for the industrialisation of new projects, production layouts and inputs to key tenders, by evaluating the requirements of Engineering, Operations, support functions and Customers leading to the development and implementation of solutions that maximise the tools, systems and resources in the organisation.
We’ll look to you for:
- From Engineering specifications, design and instructions develop, industrialise and implement cost effective solutions for maintenance and Overhaul projects
- Develop and trial new processes and methods prior to production runs
- Identify and specify Plant and Equipment
- Identify and specify Calibrated tools and equipment
- Develop standard times for tasks through support on Standard Operations
- Develop production layouts, maximising lean principles
- Identify Special Processes and implement appropriate instructions
- Identify any training requirements as a result of introducing new requirements
- Identify areas for improvements within the organisation to improve business performance
- Incorporate Lean Tools and techniques
- Working within the business improvement teams identify and implement process improvements on Maintenance and Overhaul processes
- Support the Tendering process in the introduction of new business into the organisation
- Define requirements and rules for associated tooling necessary to start production
- Issue relevant documents in the Quality System
- Support cost reduction actions, with sourcing and industrial teams.
- Assures the update of the technical and industrial documentation of the projects.
- Develop and maintain user friendly Manufacturing documentation including BOM’s, Labour estimates, Work Record Books and Work Instructions including sketches for Production Staff
- Develops standardized tools/processes improving efficiency in production activities.
- Supports the Risk Assessment and Safety Risk points, giving support to other departments when needed.

- HNC/HND in relevant discipline associated with Production Engineering University degree in Railway Engineering, Electronics, Computer Science, Automation Engineering or Electrical and Mechanical Engineering.
- Extensive knowledge and experience of production/process engineering
- Knowledge and experience of implementation of improvement methods
- Knowledge of Standard Operation procedures, tools and techniques
- Understand modern manufacturing techniques – JIT, Kanban and when and how to implement
- Experienced with industrial engineering techniques such as method study
- Problem analysis and problem solving.
