Engineering Cost Manager, Hennigsdorf, Germany

This is an unique opportunity to balance technical and business aspects and connect the dots between Engineering technical activities and processes and their associated costs.

As a Engineering Cost Manager, you will be operating in an international multi-site environment and collaborate with stakeholders from multiple Engineering disciplines as also Finance, Project Management and Procurement to ensure the Engineering costs remain on track in Rolling Stock train projects or tenders. You will also be jointly looking for cost optimization possibilities and presenting the Engineering costing data in a structured, visually appealing way for the different stakeholders.

 

Main responsibilities:

  • Coordinate the whole Engineering costing activities along the projects/tenders to meet the agreed objectives.
  • Ensure traceability and transparency of cost development versus baseline and define activities on savings and mitigations.
  • Animate cost culture within Engineering community. You will be the “voice” of ENG Cost Management in the Project/Tender team.
  • Ensure and organize regular Steering Committees to report on progress
  • Provide ENG cost management deliverables on time according to tender strategy and engineering project management plans.

 

Based on Cost Management processes, guidelines, templates and expertise of Cost Management team:

  • Build and maintain the Engineering Financial Cockpit for all Engineering Work Packages in a tender or project:
    • Breakdown of Engineering Work Packages (WPs), Actuals, Forecast, etc.
    • Create and rigorously maintain cost baselines for all ENG Work Packages
  • Drive regular handshakes with all Engineering WP owners for forecast updates and resource nomination
    • Actively challenge cost estimations provided by ENG WP owners, jointly look for and define cost effective alternatives
  • Lead Work Package Reviews (WPR) with all ENG métiers
    • Prepare indicators and analyze cost performance of all ENG WP using Project and Cost Management tools, such as Earned Value Analysis, Baseline x FC x Actuals comparison, Workload Charts, Resource Nomination
  • Improve self-servicing capabilities & on-line access to ENG cost performance data for different stakeholders:
    • Create and update online dashboards and suitable views according to stakeholder analysis.
    • Integrate and update data from multiple sources (Financial Cockpit, Deliverables status, SAP, P6, etc.) into Dashboard and present data in a user-friendly way. (e.g. using Power BI)
    • Find solutions to simplify the user interface and for users to access the relevant data following the “less is more” principle.
  • Manage the costs of changes to product and scope:
    • Validate cost estimations for CRs (Change Requests), actively look for potential gaps and optimizations as per Engineering WP execution and WoW
    • Regularly consolidate costs for all CRs in Engineering scope and prepare consolidated view for project-level WPR
    • Risk management: contribute to estimation of risk value and mitigation actions costs in cooperation with Engineering stakeholders.
    • Savings: actively search for and document cost optimization opportunities/savings within Engineering, in collaboration with WP owners, Engineering experts and other relevant stakeholders.
    • Cost control:
      • Check consistency, allocation, budget and approve/reject ENG Purchase Order Requests acc. cost plan (Balance to Go)
      • Keep track of POs raised and the remaining Balance to Go for Engineering Work Packages.
      • Actively identify and raise additional budget requests/Early Warnings to PrEM Cost Management.
      • Contribute to improvement of cost management processes, actively suggest improvements to PrEM Cost Management

 

Requirements:

  • Degree in Engineering, Business Administration or Project Management
  • Basic knowledge on Engineering way of working
  • Basic Project Management knowledge (Work packages, matrix organization, forecasting, schedules)
  • Analytical and critical thinking to connect the dots, evaluate Engineering activities vs costs. Confidence to challenge.
  • Experience consolidating data and presenting in a visually appealing way
  • Experience creating Power-Point presentations
  • Advanced English knowledge, Intermediate German knowledge (desirable)
  • Good communication, collaborative and intercultural skills
  • Kowledge in data visualization tools such as Power BI/Qlik Sense or ready and motivated to learn (highly desired)
  • Knowledge of railway industry (highly desired)
