Could you be the full-time Structures Engineer to work on part of the Structures team on both new design projects and the assessment of existing products?

 

Your future role

Take on a new challenge by being based at one of the UK Services Sites and apply your Structure Engineering expertise in a new cutting-edge field. You’ll report to Tomasso Piccinini (Engineering Manager Carbody and Structures Domain), and work alongside a dedicated and passionate Structures team in Alstom UK&I. You will be working as part of a global network of structural engineers who work closely together on multinational projects. This is a role which will involve not only Derby based projects but also projects based in other ALSTOM sites around the globe. The opportunity offers significant opportunity for career growth.

 

The Structure Engineer's primary role is to undertake structural assessments (using both manual and Finite Element methods) on rail vehicle car bodies. The role will not only include carrying out structural analysis but also the development of the designs to meet the structural and functional requirements of the products. The role will include deriving load cases, FE model setup, evaluating the results, conducting fatigue assessment, leading designs improvements, and writing reports, as well as communicating the progress and results to the Project team. This is a varied role and will also involve other duties including providing build support on existing products, participating in six sigma/8D and other activities.

We’ll look to you for:

  • Senior experience in mechanical structural engineering ideally in Railways or aerospace automotive will be considered.
  • Finite Element Calculations, Linear and non-linear.
  • Fatigue analysis (S-N life) of mechanical components.
  • General Mechanical Engineering design and problem solving.
  • Writing reports & presiding over Test programs.
  • Evaluating supplier calculations & test results.
  • Managing work undertaken by other ALSTOM sites and sub-contractors.
  • Ability to work within allocated budget & schedule.
  • Ability to define and manage priorities within deadlines.
  • Writing technical reports, evaluating supplier calculations & test results.

  • Suggesting design improvements (reinforcement or simplifications) of calculated parts.

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in mechanical engineering or similar related degree with senior experience, preferably applied to Railway products.
  • Knowledge of fatigue and FEA analysis, weld and bolt assembly design.

 

Desirable

  • Experience in Finite Element analysis packages, such as Hyperworks, Ansys, Patran/Nastran, Abaqus or similar, linear, and non-linear assessments.
  • Previous experience in using CAD packages such as CATIA, and Pro Engineer is a plus.
  • Understanding of Structural Mechanics and the fundamentals of Fatigue assessment methods
  • Demonstrable practical experience in Mechanical Engineering outside of the role of structural mechanics, such as design, dynamics, and testing are desirable.
  • Willingness to develop a wide range of skills and flexibility to work on a variety of projects which require different engineering skills.
  • Willingness to travel to visit other ALSTOM sites, suppliers, and customers.
