Purpose of the Job

The post holder will be an experienced Mechanical Systems Engineer with relevant railway industry experience, although candidates with similar experience from other industries will be considered.

Working within the Mechanical Services Systems Engineering team, the primary purpose of this position is to develop mechanical engineering solutions and engineering change documentation, predominantly focused on Safety, Reliability, System Enhancement, and Maintenance.

You will be required to develop, validate and prepare modifications and maintenance changes for Alstom (and ex-Bombardier) supported fleets under the Services Engineering Change process.

This role will cover the following types of work:

Leading technical investigations, fault finding, root cause analysis, concept design, modification development, and verification/validation of proposed solutions.  The role will cover all mechanical systems which includes, but not limited to, Pneumatics, Brakes, Bogies, Couplers, HVAC, Structures, Diesel engines, and Transmissions.  A working knowledge of EN Standards and Rail Group Standards is preferred but not essential.

The candidate will need to be capable of carrying out risk assessments and FMEAs (failure mode analyses) for mechanical systems.  Experience of retrofit and refurbishment activities within the constraints of an operating environment is also preferred.  The role will require some degree of flexibility from the job holder as there may be a requirement to travel to undertake tasks at depot locations.

Acting as Lead Engineer supporting bid activity for innovative and complex solutions as part of fleet modernisation and enhancement.

Author technical requirement specifications and have experience in providing detailed clause by clause responses to customer queries.

 

Your responsibilities:

  • Develop high quality, safe, reliable, and cost-effective engineering solutions for supported in service fleets.
  • Provide expert technical support for UK supported fleets.  Provide ‘2nd’ line support for the resolution of in-service issues.  Providing technical solutions to safety issues and supporting incident investigations and testing.
  • Provide cost and schedule estimates on engineering programs.
  • Provide the creative input to develop innovative fleet management solutions to support bids, sales, and margin enhancement opportunities.  Liaise with all internal and external stakeholders as required.
  • Provide Technical support and governance to Field Maintenance (Depot) engineering teams, helping projects to minimize risk and maximize opportunities without impacting on the safety of the trains.
  • Check and approve technical documents, drawings, and reports produced by other team and members, providing technical guidance on any rework required.

 

Key requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in a Mechanical Engineering based degree; Chartered Engineer status (preferred). Candidates with HNC/D and relevant level of experience may also be considered.
  • Excellent knowledge and understanding of mechanical engineering principals.
  • Significant experience of railway engineering, ideally with Rolling Stock, engineering change, repair procedures, and fleet management.
  • Competency to Advanced Practitioner level in at least one of the following Mechanical Systems, and ideally Independent Practitioner level in several others:- Pneumatics, Brakes, Bogies, Couplers, HVAC, Structures, Diesel engines, Transmissions
