Purpose of the role

The post holder will ensure that all Alstom in Service Light Rail and Metro have an appropriate Design Authority identified for them, who is competent and follows a defined process.
Develop and share best practice to drive cost performance and efficiencies 
Identify ways to extend the product life cycle and develop growth opportunities.



Key accountabilities: 
•    Ensure that all Alstom Light Rail and Metro fleets have a Design Authority identified for them, who has been assessed as competent to perform the role
•    Support the Projects/Programs Engineering team to ensure that the correct technical governance is being applied (e.g. suitable design and expert input, defining and enforcing architecture/métier standards, methodologies, processes, tools and solution frameworks against which programs and projects can deliver) – focusing inwardly on the internal consistency; and outwardly on its coherence with other solutions/métiers and standards.
•    Review the technical input and subject matter expertise of the proposed design, covering areas such as the definition of requirements compliance, functional fit, technological capability, cost, and delivery capability
•    Assess the feasibility of the proposed solution (performance, delivery model and organizational fit), and propose mitigation plans
•    Engages with projects/programs to ensure technical risks are being identified and managed
•    Chair Design Reviews for subject matter in his/her field of critical developments and projects
•    Ensure the implementation of generic products and systems by multi-project synergies in order to optimize cost of technical solutions.
•    Propose technical innovation and roadmap development as required in answer to the business strategy of his/her field, with a constant preoccupation to make optimization on the company portfolio and internal processes.
•    Maintain view of industry and standards, and domain technical watch to guide orientation with market trends.
•    Provide pre-tendering support regarding business opportunities where expected solution does not exist in current portfolio.
•    To assist tenders to ensure consistency between the tender development needs and the programs development roadmap   
Performance measurements: 
•    Coverage of critical developments and projects by Design Reviews
•    CONQ reduction & 8D avoidance by early technical risks identification


•    Graduated from a STEM university-type course
•    Chartered engineering or similar
•    Design Authority Knowledge
•    Certification in System Engineering
•    Strong experience of design/service engineering 
•    Expertise in the subject matter in his field
•    Experience in rail industry – mandatory
•    Experience in System Design & Methodology
•    Innovation Management
•    Experience in a Services Organisation
•    High level of expertise of his/her domain (WCE Senior or Master Expert)
•    Strong technical leadership, and technical risk management
•    Key technical player, result & process driven
•    Ability to work transversally with engineering teams 
•    Positive and pro-active behavior 
•    Keep committed towards internal and external stakeholders 
•    Demonstrated capabilities in problem identification, problem solving, and decision making
•    Fluent English & good communication skills
