Your future role
Take on a new challenge and apply your engineering expertise in a new cutting-edge field. You’ll report to Colin Lindley (Electrical Design Manager, Derby), and work alongside other members of the Services Central Engineering team. The primary role will be to carry out Electrical Design activities related to legacy Services fleets and the large fleet of Aventra units that are moving over to Services Engineering.
You'll be providing electrical design support activity related to Engineering Changes requested by our customers and be responsible for the upkeep of electrical core data (schematics and wiring). Day-to-day, you’ll work closely within the Services Central Engineering Electrical Design team for Alstom’s large and ever-increasing number of in-service fleets and much more.
We’ll look to you for:
- Develop electrical installation/wiring solutions for modifications developed by the System's team or from external 3rd parties and handle/ manage the upkeep of the affected core electrical data. This involves updating electrical schematics, wiring tables. BOMs (Bill of Materials), creating harness stick diagrams & cable installation routing diagrams.
- Prepare modification design data, analyze, develop, test and demonstrate Electrical Engineering solutions that solve complex issues for vehicle installation requirements.
- Provide electrical design cost and schedule estimates on complicated engineering programs.
- Provide technical expertise in support of other disciplines.
- Attend Alstom and customer sites to carry out on-train surveys during the various phases of design and implementation activity.
- Respond promptly to (TQ's) technical queries raised by the customer against design data.
- Due to the nature of the role the successful candidate will be required, to work at height and in enclosed spaces, from time to time.

- The job-holder will need to demonstrate rolling stock experience as an electrical design & integration engineer of on-train systems and wiring.
- Hold a minimum qualification of a Level 4 in an electrical discipline.
- The candidate must be fully competent in using CAD and wiring tools to update electrical core data. Therefore, full proficiency in the use of Microstation, ELDA (Alstom wiring tool), Excel and Catia are key requirements for this role in order to update electrical schematics and wiring data.
- Have exposure to the use of Digital Mock Ups (CAD modelling) of harnesses, electrical cubicles/equipment, updating or creating new electrical schematics, wiring reports, (BOMs) Bills of Materials, Harness Diagrams, Formboards/stick diagrams, installation, assembly & details drawings is required.
- Demonstrate a working knowledge of EN and Rail Group Standards related to electrical design.
- An understanding of the optimum and standardization approach to wiring solutions is required to be able to deploy cable routes and materials to achieve optimum installation times.
- Have a sound understanding of electrical engineering principles and be able to understand system functions and interpret circuit diagrams
