Your future role
Take on a new challenge in Crewe and apply your Mechanical Engineering expertise in a new cutting-edge field. You’ll report to the Head of Technical Services and work alongside a dedicated and passionate Services team in Alstom UK&I.
Day-to-day, you will manage and control all Mechanical Product Engineering related activities at Crewe, including assurance of product safety. He/She will be be part of the engineering interface with customer, central engineering and relevant Alstom support functions. We’ll look to you to the following:
- Be part of a dedicated, site-based engineering team, providing hands-on support to ensure seamless overhauls, repairs, and maintenance of vital railway components e.g. Wheelsets, Bogies, Traction motors, HVAC and other associated Subcomponents.
- Work closely with customers, project teams, and production staff to align engineering activities with operational goals and ensure top-tier service delivery.
- Investigate safety-related and high-value product failures, collaborating with teams and customers to find solutions that enhance reliability and performance.
- Lead and support product overhauls from the initial bid stage right through to full implementation, ensuring smooth integration into our operations.
- Develop and validate repair procedures, working closely with suppliers and customers to approve innovative and effective solutions.
- Provide technical leadership to engineers within the team, offering guidance, expertise, and project management support to drive success.
- Drive continuous improvement by recommending updates to overhaul specifications and processes that boost both product quality and business efficiency.
- Support new projects and product introductions, managing technical queries, warranty investigations, cost-saving initiatives, and alternative sourcing solutions.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including central engineering, quality, purchasing, and manufacturing, to maintain the highest standards of safety, integrity, and efficiency.
- Play a key role in securing new business, supporting bids and sales opportunities for the Crewe site.

- Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or equivalent qualification, ideally with Chartered status;
- Strong experience in a similar role (product engineering type of role), ideally in railway industry;
- Fleet Engineering experience is desirable;
- Mechanical/Production Engineering experience;
- Understanding of railway safety
- Be able to demonstrate the ability to use this technical knowledge in the support of other departments (Methods, Production, Procurement, Projects) and the development of engineering personnel;
- Experience of developing and applying a range of mechanical engineering process and tools;
- Experience of working across many different disciplines, with indirect reports to delivery complaint cost effective solutions technical solutions to schedule and budget;
- Experience of converting the customer's explicit and implicit technical and functional requirements into technical/ functional specifications;
- Very good communication and stakeholder management skills, ability to negotiate and influence others;
- Results driven individual with good problem-solving skills;
- Specialist knowledge and/or qualification in the areas of torqued joints, bonding, shrink fits or painting would be advantageous
- English language skills: advanced/business fluent level.
