Alstom is the UK & Ireland’s leading supplier of new trains, train services, and signalling infrastructure projects. It has built just under 40% of the UK’s mainline train fleet, all the fleets currently in service with London Underground and Dublin’s LUAS.

 

It is building the UK’s biggest train programme in a generation – AVENTRA - for seven of the UK’s largest train operating companies, is ramping up to build the next generation of Greater Dublin’s commuter trains, DART+ as well as 54 HS2 high-speed trains in a Joint Venture. Alstom also supports 66% of the UK fleet through its Services business and is the UK’s leading CP6 signalling & infrastructure provider.

 

Employing 6,000 people across the UK and Ireland, we design, build and test trains at the UK’s largest end-to-end train manufacturing factory in Derby and operate major sites at Widnes, Crewe, Ilford and Plymouth, as well as 30 train services depots across the UK&I.

 

 

Your future role

You’ll report to the Engineering Manager and work alongside inspiring and dedicated project engineers.

Day-to-day, you’ll work closely with teams across the business to identify and implement safe, cost effective, containment and countermeasures to identified product safety and reliability issues; managed by the utilization of standard Project Management principles and much more.

You’ll specifically, manage work streams to improve the product, and deliver customer Variation Orders to improve the margin of the contract.

 

This position, whilst complimenting the engineering team supporting product improvement and cost avoidance (all whilst prioritising safety above all), will lead the team to identify and mitigate obsolescence issues affecting the project.

Working closely with Alstom’s Central Engineering, Procurement and Documentation control divisions, you will be expected to liaise with external parties to resolve obsolescence in a timely manner, at all times keeping the customer (GTR) updated with the latest developments

 

We’ll look to you for:

•            Identify and implement safe, cost effective, containment and countermeasures to identified product safety issues and track them through accurate reporting of safety issues to on time implementation of countermeasures.

•            Develop and deliver engineering change to improve fleet/system reliability performance, reduce cost of maintenance & deliver customer variation solutions.

•            ROP, identify risks and opportunities that will affect projected costs/savings to the project. Working to, and building actions supporting risk mitigation, change management, planning and opportunities management.

•            Support the project to resolve operational issues, technical questions and material investigations raised internally or externally, leading to reliability/safety and cost saving improvements.

•            Support the Project Reliability Board to implement containment and countermeasures on identified key reliability failure modes.

•            Lead improvement projects to reduce train maintenance and operation costs, whilst ensuring that the specified fleet maintenance regime is certificated, adhered to, and complies with all relevant legislation, and associated limitations are effectively managed through controls such as concessions.

•            Incident Root cause analysis and performance attribution IAW The railway group standards i.e. ‘The Rule Book’.

•            Obsolescence management. Liaising with suppliers, OEM`s and outside parties to identify and resolve obsolescence issues.

•            Assisting the customer with detailed fault finding and diagnostics as requested through the TQ system.

•            The role drives for change, the prospective employee should be reasonably autonomous in leading cross-functional projects and flexible to changing needs of the business.

•            Provide train systems engineering advice for the vehicle as a whole and for the key vehicle systems (such as TCMS - train control system, HVAC, propulsion, brakes, doors, on-train communications etc.)

•            Produce solutions that provide short term mitigation and long term resolution.

•            Monitoring of warranty issues and liaising with supplier technical teams.

•            Ensuring correct replacement parts are sourced.

•            Assisting operator in updating of maintenance instructions, overhaul instruction, processes & procedures to optimize maintenance and liaise with Alstom Technical Publications and Central Engineering teams where required.

•            Monitor of trains in Service using remote monitoring system called Orbita.

•            Down load train data from onboard train data recorders using laptops.

•            Run diagnostics software to identify faults with various train systems i.e. hydraulic systems, pneumatic systems, train management systems & on board computers.

•            Engineering support for all safety related incidents (NIRs), including representing the Customer with respect to access to Design Authority and equipment OEM’s and the production of affirmative closing actions.

•            Service Provider representation on the internal safety forum, feeding back decisions and outputs to the Customer.

•            Share experience gained of other fleets across the world which the Service Provider has supplied and/or supports, provision of recommendations and opportunities for design improvements, standardisation and/or modifications.

•            Contribution to Health and Safety on a daily basis.

•            Experience in fleet maintenance or asset management environment.

•            Experience in organization and project planning/management skills, governance, and execution.

•            Strong engineering knowledge of traction and rolling stock systems, and traction and rolling stock maintenance policies and practices or similar roles.

•            Understanding of key engineering processes (ex: risk assessments, FMECA…) and standards.

•            Problem-solving abilities and practical experience of root cause analysis techniques.

•            Computer literate (MS Windows + Office, Microsoft Projects,)

•            Experience in delivering rail vehicle engineering change, including risk assessments and approvals.

•            Relevant engineering experience covering obsolescence, reliability, fault finding, 8D investigations in similar industries (i.e. public transportation, military) demonstrating some management responsibilities.

•            Demonstrable use of engineering knowledge, standard project management techniques and awareness of standards and the constraints of the delivery organization to support, justify and manage changes.

•            Strong report writing skills.

•            Ability to read schematics / datasheets

•            Setting up test environments

•            A strong team player, with effective interpersonal skills.

 

Essential

 

•            Relevant engineering experience

 

 

Desirable

 

•            Degree level HNC/HND in an engineering related subject.

•            Knowledge of rail industry legislation and safety case obligations.
