Purpose of role
This role will be based at either Soho or Bletchley depot and will be responsible for overseeing Fleet Maintenance Engineering (FME) activities for the Class 730 fleets, comprising both 3-car and 5-car units, operating across both locations.
Take on a new challenge and apply your engineering and management expertise in a modern cutting-edge field. You will report to the Services Engineering Manager, and work alongside highly motivated and agile teammates.
You'll be leading and coordinating a team of Engineers to deliver activities and projects to provide a safe, reliable, and cost-efficient fleet of trains, which meets the Train Operator’s presentation requirements and complies with their Safety Case obligations. The role is approximately split 50:50 between Engineering and Management activities and involve both day to day availability and reliability alongside future innovative engineering solutions.
We will look to you for:
- Leadership, as an integral part of the project core team, you’ll understand the required deliverables for the Engineering team to support the project’s business objectives.
- Your ability to use effective project planning and governance to organise and co-ordinate the team to deliver its key business objectives on a day-to-day basis, feeding into core team governance activities as required.
- Effective communication, being the primary interface with customers for project level engineering activities and governance, including supporting periodic technical review meetings.
- Acting as the technical authority for the team to review/approve change and a point for escalation for the team to resolve roadblocks/conflict with (internal and external) customers and suppliers.
- Leading the development and delivery of engineering change to improve fleet/system reliability performance, reduce cost of maintenance & deliver customer variation solutions.
- Professional support for the identification and implementation of safe, cost effective, containments and countermeasures to identified product safety issues.
- Leading the planning and delivery readiness (inc. BoM’s, work instructions & configuration) for scheduled maintenance activities, as defined by the Vehicle Maintenance Instruction.
- Ensuring that the specified fleet maintenance regime is certificated, adhered to and complies with all relevant legislation, and associated limitations are effectively managed.
- Supporting the depot Operations teams and Fleet Control teams in resolving arising fleet issues – this may include the requirement to undertake out of hours duties.
- The successful candidate will be required to work at height and in enclosed spaces from time to time

- Ideally educated to Degree or Higher Certificate in engineering/technical discipline
- Chartered status or actively working toward chartered status (advantageous)
- Strong engineering/technical knowledge of traction and rolling stock systems and maintenance policies/practices
- Experience in fleet maintenance or asset management environment
- Experience in delivering rail vehicle engineering change, including risk assessments and approvals
- Knowledge of rail industry legislation and safety case obligations
On a more personal level, you will also need to have:
- Excellent organisational, resource management and team development skills
- Strong project management and stakeholder management skills
