Alstom Digital & Integrated Systems offers a wide range of services and products related to signaling technology and infrastructure. In close cooperation with our worldwide product competence centers, we cover not only business development, sales and offer management, but also customer-oriented project execution including project management, system engineering, certification and homologation, documentation, mechanical integration, installation, commissioning and warranty.


In this context, we are offering a VIE opportunity within our Engineering department  based in our offices in Berlin,Germany for 12 / 24 months.

As a system engineer, you will play an active role in the deployment of intelligent and environmental friendly mobility systems in Germany/Austria/Switzerland. From the bidding phase to project execution, you will be integrated in the international bid or project team to deploy Alstom solution.


Your mission:
The System engineering team is at the crossroad between all development and project engineering activities. Reporting to the engineering manager, you support the project and tender teams in project and engineering activities in different domains such as System Design, Service Engineering or Homologation:


System Design

  • Analysis of customer requirements, creation of functional specifications, technical coordination and cooperation with the relevant development centers and technical partners
  • Interface with project engineering and product teams based in Belgium and France to understand the customer needs and propose safe, efficient, and optimized designs, as well as contribute to the solution deployment


Service engineering

  • First level analysis of issues seen during operation, as contact person for the customer
  • Technical clarification with the Alstom signalling teams in Belgium and France for detailed analysis 
  • Organisation and participation campaigns to validation of corrective versions on the test bench or on the train (e.g. ICE fleet)



  • Planning of homologation activities based on existing standards, regulations and experience from previous or similar projects, development of a work plan for the homologation activities (definition of test plan, organization of test session, redaction of test report)
  • Interface with Verification & Validation teams, Safety teams, Quality, Reliability Availability Maintenability teams in order to explain the technical solution, and adjust the design according to their analyses


Your profile:
Educated to Bachelor/Master Degree with a specialization in Engineering or similar with a good industrial comprehension, you have ideally a first experience in an international industrial environment. You are interested in railway products and sustainable mobility and understanding a complex technical system is a challenge you like. You like being part of an international and intercultural team and are open-minded to integrate well into a changing environment. Good communication skills, autonomy and organizational skills are your further key assets for this position. Good language level of English & German is mandatory, French will be an asset. Excellent MS office skills and capability to rapidly learn other Software-Tools are required.

Details of the Volunteers for International Experience (VIE) programme:

  • Assignments are open for men and women between 18 and 28 years, citizens of European Union countries, who have fulfilled the military service obligations of their country; 
  • A VIE assignment will be in a country other than that of the applicant; 
  • Set up by public sector statute in France, managed by the BusinessFrance organisation; 
  • Assignment lasts from six to 24 months, renewable once within a cumulative limit of 24 months; 
  • Compensation (non-taxable) linked to the cost of living index and set by BusinessFrance according to the destination country; 
  • International social protection is extended to eligible parties; 
  • 2.5 days of holiday per month
