The GO Expansion scope: new electric locomotives, fleet upgrades, train control systems, network electrification, signalling, telecommunications and digital systems, maintenance, and much more.
 
Objective
The Network and Telecommunications (N&T) Design Leader will be responsible for delivering project solutions as lead architect working both independently and with others performing analysis of customer and product management inputs to define concepts and requirements used to develop solutions for automation and control products / systems for the railroad industry. Focus will be on one or more fundamental areas for one or more domains in various phases of the system life cycle from pre-acquisition through operation and maintenance and system retirement. The candidate must provide technical assistance and leadership associated with hardware/software development, integration, test, and deployment of systems.
 
Main Responsibilities 

Multi-disciplinary environment working with the requirements, design, engineering, validation and commissioning of project communication related systems. Solutions utilize licensed and unlicensed voice and data radios, LAN/WAN networks, and back office servers as well as other communication links between locomotives, between locomotives and wayside equipment, and/or between wayside and central office locations.  

 

The N&T System Design Leader role requires the ability to self-perform as well as manage and coordinate the efforts of other supporting engineers to deliver the following:

  • Perform Communications Engineering tasks in support of program objectives
  • Supporting project proposals
  • Interface with Customers, Vendors, and Subcontractors
  • Trace system requirements to DOORS
  • Definition of system and subsystem-level requirements and conceptual, preliminary, and detail design documentation including system level, functional, physical (incl. installation design), and interfaces.
  • Define Scopes-of-Work for Vendor, and Subcontractor quotes
  • Develop & peer review test procedures and documentation to validate system requirements
  • Document technical data generated by the assigned project consistent with engineering policies and procedures
  • Network design and troubleshooting of LAN/WAN, fiber layouts, and drawings
  • Cross-platform experience in systems administration, installation, and configuration of Servers
  • Radio troubleshooting, propagation design, post processing, intermodulation studies, and radio dimensioning
  • Design of link budgets for various radio technologies
  • Coordinate with Regional and National authorities for frequency planning and license application
  • Ensure DCS project team members are aligned on a common planning understanding (Radio and BTN). All actions need to be shared and anticipated through internal project N&T Design synchronization meetings
  • Follow up on any outstanding Design issues and take the lead when appropriate
  • Provide technical support to program managers and project engineers when communicating with customers
  • Provide technical support to Systems and Software Engineers to assist with development of new system architectures or technologies
  • Provide technical support to V&V and T&C teams to assist with deployment
  • Provide technical assistance to ensure all COMM products meet regulatory requirements for both domestic and international applications
  • Ensure Design documents be delivered as per project Documentation plan (Documentation Master List) in line with project DFQ Gate Reviews milestones
  • Adapt and apply Network & Telecom Engineering rules and standards to Project Design
  • Manage Internal team schedules and coordination with other project and execution schedules
  • Execute Preliminary Design studies in line with contractual requirements
  • Participate in network architecture design activities
  • Participate upon request to Installation and T&C activities

 

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or college
  • 5-10 years of engineering or other technical work experience
  • 3 years of experience in a systems engineering role
  • Professionnal Engineering certification or in progress
  • Willingness and ability to travel <25% of the time

 

Skills

  • CCNA/CCNP/CCDE/CCIE certifications desirable
  • RCDD, Professional Engineer, and/or C.I.T. certifications desirable
  • Systems Engineering principles and methods
  • Cross-platform experience integrating communications and IT solutions
  • Design of networks
  • Practical experience with MPLS networks
  • Wired and Wireless Networking, Routing, Switching, Subnetting, VLAN, MPLS
  • OSP Fiber design and deployment
  • IT systems administration, installation, configuration, and of Servers and virtual environments
  • Operating Systems include VMware, Windows, and Linux
  • Strong knowledge of network hardware including servers, routers, and other computer devices
  • Firewall administration
  • Voice and data RF design and implementation (WLAN, WWAN, Tetra, DMR, P25, 3G/4G/LTE, etc.)
  • Project Engineering / Project Management
  • Proficient with MS Office
